NEWS FROM MRS. MANKIN
Dear Bulldog Families,
We are just now a month into second semester, and we have launched a variety of inquiry-driven, service-oriented, and problem-based learning opportunities. Our student council has been collecting canned items for the Delaware Township Food Pantry. This project has been researched, advertised, and coordinated by our students. Mrs. Sarkovics and Mrs. Robinson’s classes also promoted a food drive in November to help stock the shelves of this local food pantry. In both cases, student ideas drove the work. Thank you to those who have donated. It is always meaningful to Be There for others, and it is even more relevant that it benefits our local community.
Our 4th grade art and PE classes are joining to create artwork and messages on paper, Kroger grocery bags to promote the importance of healthy eating and physical fitness. These bags will then be taken to the Kroger on 116th and Cumberland Road in hopes of encouraging healthy living. Mrs. Moore (kindergarten) and Mrs. Buening’s (third grade) classes are in the planning phases of a book drive to promote and spread the joy of reading. They recently had an expert from the Hamilton East Public Library come and talk to them about books, readers, and the volume of books that are held in and checked out from the public library. Look for more information about this service project soon.
Several classes school-wide are engaged in some problem-based learning regarding the following question: How can we as Bulldogs help keep the cafeteria a clean and enjoyable place to eat lunch?
Students are brainstorming some things we can all do to take more ownership of this shared space. We are also reviewing our FISH expectations for the cafeteria. Please help us by asking your child about our cafeteria expectations below and how he/she does his/her part.
Mrs. Peters’ kindergarten class has been fortunate to connect with a class in Haiti this year. They have become aware of both similarities and differences regarding their lives. Here are just a few:
Some items in their classroom look similar to ours. They have desks and dry erase boards.
We saw a picture of them, and they were learning math.
They have limited technology. We could not Skype with them because of this.
They only have electricity for an hour each day. The students are only able to go to school for a half-day, in the morning.
The students connected with a few experts to learn more about the needs of the people in Haiti. As a result, Mrs. Peters’ students have brainstormed even more ways to Be There for this class (and maybe even other children at the school). They came up with the idea to have Fun February Fridays in which Bulldog students can participate in Friday spirit days with the donation of up to $1 each time. Students can bring 1, 2, 3, or 4 quarters (or a dollar bill) to participate in each Fun Friday in February. They will then use the donations to implement some of their other ideas of ways they can help. We will be sure to share how we are able to use the money when money is collected and the students decide.
These are just of few of the student-centered learning experiences that are blooming at New Britton. We are proud of the ways in which our students have been using their voice and engaging in learning that is relevant and helpful to others. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Mrs. Adrienne Moore - Kindergarten Teacher
A Little about Me: This is my 10th year teaching Kindergarten. I am married and have two daughters. Everly is 3 1/2 years old and Berkley is 5 months old. I love reading and I love going to the movies. One of my favorite things to do is to read a book and then watch the movie or show that it's made into. Harry Potter is my favorite!
What Brings Me Joy: Watching the bond that my girls have made, already, brings me so much joy! I love watching my daughter's reaction to her first time doing things I used to love when I was a little girl, like watching a classic Disney movie. My students bring me so much joy when I see the love they have for learning every day and their enthusiasm to help the community. I love visiting the retirement community with my class to sing songs for Valentine's Day. It is so magical and heartwarming.
Favorite Food: I'm obsessed with hibachi, especially Izakaya! I love the rice, veggies and yum yum sauce. As far as fast food, Chick-fil-A wins every time!
Favorite place to visit: I love visiting The Smoky Mountains. That's where I went on family vacations growing up and that's where I got married, so it has a lot of special meaning to me. I also loved going to Harry Potter World at Universal Studios and I can't wait to go back for my second time this year!
