PHS makes progress on "Dream Connection"

The idea behind the "Dream Connection" room is a place at school that community members can use in the evening hours to connect with students. During the day, it will be used by teachers for instructional purposes. Principal Sheridan reports, "It is going to be the most innovative room on campus by the time we are done!" Even better, the class is being designed and built by Mr. Harston's Industrial Arts class. Students pulled the room apart and designed the new one using the Google Sketch Up program. Can't wait to see it when it is completed!

PUSD completes 1st 1:1 computing classroom rollout

Mrs. Groh's 3rd-grade classroom successfully completed our first 1:1 computing rollout. Each student now has a laptop computer for classroom use. Today, 3rd graders completed four logins: computer, Google, Seesaw and Spelling City. Quite an accomplishment for a first-time rollout. Students then completed an online spelling assessment, graded by the computer. A huge thank you to our board for their support of this project and to our tech department for making this happen! Our first 1:1 teachers have also accepted quite a challenge to be the first in our district. Thank you for your willingness to learn! Computers will continue to be rolled out to our 1:1 classrooms over the next month, two classrooms per site. Our two goals with 1:1 computing are 1)Student engagement and 2)Personalized learning. We all still have much to learn in this area but we are excited to be moving forward!

Fall Outdoor Education camp finishes up with QES

Our last elementary school finished up with Outdoor Ed today. All in all, nearly 200 students including high school counselors went through camp this year. This is a highlight not only of the sixth grade year, but also for our high school students that serve as camp counselors. 6th grade students go on a variety of hikes, play Pioneers and Outlaws and hike Spanish Peak. Lastly, they end with the "Polar Bear Plunge" ... brrrr. Thank you to our Outdoor Education Coordinator Rob Wade and all the teachers, staff and volunteers that make this a marquee program for PUSD and PCOE.

Peer to Peer Observations

One service provided by our Instructional Coaches is the facilitation of peer to peer observations. This week, teachers from IVES and CRC observed instructional strategies at QES. Pictured is Mrs. Sipe doing a 1st grade math lesson with students gathered on the rug. The teachers visited three classrooms and discussed how they could adapt what they saw to their own instruction to improve learning. Some were techniques they hadn't seen before and others were ways to improve the effectiveness of routines they already had in place. Teachers reported this made them feel less isolated and they would like to visit another school site later this year.

If you are interested in visiting another school site and participating in a peer to peer observation, contact one of our Instructional Coaches.

Strengthening the Start

PUSD is focusing on a strong start to each class period or learning opportunity, honing in on these three areas:

Learning Environment: A sustained, successful start routine promoting positive behavior and a positive learning environment is evidenced for all students.

Instructional Time: A sustained, successful start routine optimizing efficient and effective student learning is evidenced for all students.

Student Engagement: All students actively participate and engage in the sustained, successful start expectations.

Want a quick way to check for understanding?

This week, our Instructional Coaches modeled the use of Plickers in the Monday collaboration in Indian Valley. Plickers is an easy way to check for understanding digitally with students, kind of like a low tech student response system. Each student is given a paper QR code and can respond with an a, b, c or d based on the rotation of the card. The teacher then scans the room with a device and Plickers does the collecting of data for you.
