From our School Resource Officer, Office Joe Choiniere
Over the past week, we've had a few visits to the KPMS campus from a fox family. We've been in communication with the local Animal Control Office and have been keeping an eye on the situation.
Below is some information shared with Officer Joe from the local Animal Control Office:
This is the time of year where foxes will den under sheds/decks/in walls/mulch piles, and other like places if these areas are made available to them. Once the fox dens are disbanded after nursing, or the foxes are removed through legal trapping (in MA this is done by hiring a trapper and it is a lethal method so should be reserved for extreme situations), the best thing to do is destroy all accesses to the den to prevent another wild animal from moving in where the foxes have moved out. Young kits, when freshly weaned do struggle to learn to thrive initially on their own. They will frequent open areas that they feel are safe and are opportunistic feeders. The key to not having them inhabit your yard is through harassment per MA Wildlife's instruction.
Although more active at night, foxes do show themselves often during daylight hours, especially if there is a litter. The parents use this time to socialize with their litter and to also recoup on nourishment.
Where Norfolk Animal Control and Norfolk Police may step in: All wildlife is under the jurisdiction of MA Wildlife and they have the ultimate say in how local authorities can/may step in. The only time, under law (without special permits from the state) that local authorities may step in is if there is an animal that is showing signs of neurological impairment consistent with rabies, an attack upon a human or domestic animal, or in a humane act to euthanize a critically injured animal.
Under MA law there is no "trap and relocate" allowed in MA. The state urges residents to make their properties less desirable to wildlife moving in through reinforcement of structures and through harassment techniques.
The main number for MA Wildlife is (508) 389-6300. When you get through on their line you should ask to speak with a "fur bearer biologist". They are trained to address your concerns and give you trips and tricks on how to deter these animals. As a landowner, you are also entitled by law to trap/euthanize (using legal means) any animal that is causing harm to your property. Likewise, property owners may hire a licensed trapper to trap and euthanize the animals. The best course of action, for the animal's safety is to try to work with harassment techniques to deter them, rather than to euthanize all the foxes. Foxes do play a part in our ecological niche' and removal of them will only promote another family of wildlife moving in if the issues of denning accessibility are not addressed.
Below is a link from MA Wildlife with an overview of foxes in Massachusetts. Also you will find a link for problems with wildlife and also problem animal control agents (PACs). PAC agents are licensed wildlife exterminators and the state maintains a list on line of everyone in the state licensed to perform this function.

There are some hazing techniques you can deploy to scare foxes from your yard per MA Wildlife if they are being imprinted to human proximity. Spray with a garden hose if they come into your yard, loud noises like banging pot lids together, yelling, air horn, etc., and predator urine (such as synthetic coyote urine- can be found on amazon and local feed & seed stores.
