I've had a few great questions from several teachers in regards to administering an official IRI and/or a running record. I thought I would send out a few reminders and answers to these frequently ask questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ideally, the teacher should start assessing the student on their independent level.
For levels A-K the accuracy should be 95-100 %
For level L-N the accuracy should be 98-100%
When do I more to the next level?
If your student is scoring in the independent level of accuracy and comprehension then you will move up to the next level.
If the student can read without errors, but struggles with comprehension can I move forward?
If a student is scoring independently in accuracy, but low in comprehension this is the level you should stay in.
Frequently Asked Questions II
While administering the comprehension questions can a student look back into the text?
Absolutely, it is acceptable for a child to search back in the book for answers to prompts, if he or she initiates the action.
What do the numbers represent for comprehension? (0-3)
0- Not Proficient
1- Limited Proficiency
2- Approaching Proficiency
3- Proficient
