Amendment 1

By: Audrey Ross

Exact Amendment

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Who are the beneficiaries?

The first amendment should apply to everyone, but in reality only America is given these rights.

Why was this amendment put in place?

The First Amendment was written because at America’s inception, citizens demanded a guarantee of their basic freedoms. Our blueprint for personal freedom and the hallmark of an open society, the First Amendment protects freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly and petition. Without the First Amendment, religious minorities could be persecuted.

When was the amendment ratified?

The first amendment was ratified on December 15, 1791.
