Fluency
A focus for ALL students in ALL grades. Below are tons of engaging activities/resources I hope you can use to strengthen your balanced literacy program. Some would be perfect as stations, Daily 5 rotations, or to use with a volunteer/tutor. Remember to challenge and meet the needs of each child. These resources can be used in all of our Kindergarten through 3rd grade classrooms! Readers theatre provides an entertaining, yet productive way for students to practice and master fluency. Check out some of our now 3rd Graders from a play last year!

Let's JIVE
Who remembers learning something to a song? I remember learning my multiplication tables and historical articles to common tunes. There is a lot of research associating a direct correlation between retention and music. Have fun exploring these videos and sample lessons from Lyrics 2 Learn. I KNOW there are tons of videos available for Kindergarten - 3rd Grade, it's just up to us to find some that work!

Depth of Knowledge (DOK) and Higher Order Thinking
As you create you lesson plans for the next few weeks, think about explicit ways that you can increase higher order and critical thinking for your students. Try to focus on limiting the questions that are on the surface ("touch questions")? Instead focus on frequently asking students to dig deeper? This DOK wheel provides verbs to access various difficulty levels to meet the needs of each of our students. Just like most of our activities, there should be a variety of DOK questions we pose. Similarly, when planning activities focus on those that will develop critical thinking and deep understanding. Use the chart below to challenge yourself to think of ways to change a Level 1 or 2 activity to a Level 3 or 4 activity. Students need the continuum, but the more we ask kids to extend their thinking the more independent and effective learners they will be!! Your kids will thank you!!
