Heights Happenings
Winston Heights PS - Term 2, Week 6 2022
Principal's Message
Band Camp
Last Monday night I was delighted to attend my first Winston Heights Band Camp. I would like to congratulate all our Band students on their exemplary behaviour at the recent band camp. The teachers, parent volunteers, tutors and staff at Crusaders have all made special comment of how safe, respectful and responsible you were.
Band Camp and other events do not proceed without teacher and parent support. Thank you to every parent that helped whether it was transporting instruments, serving food or supervising, your support was greatly appreciated. I would like to pay special thanks to the teachers that attended. Teachers don’t receive overtime and there is no time in lieu. These staff members took time away from their own families to provide an opportunity for our students and the camp would not have proceeded without their commitment. I thank them for their dedication to Winston Heights students.
While lots of great musical progress was made on camp, I know there were many fun moments, lots of laughter, musical tutorials, challenging physical activities and lasting friendships forged. Congratulations on such an amazing Band Camp 2022!
Attendance Matters!
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
The importance of arriving at school and class on time:
- Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
- Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
- Give students time to greet their friends before class
- Reduces classroom disruption
- Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.
Parking Near and Around Winston Heights PS
Recently, several calls have been made from community members frustrated that access in and out of their personal driveways is being blocked due to the parked cars of parents/carers dropping off or picking up students. In the morning and afternoon, it can be very busy around schools and locating a parking spot can be challenging. It can be tempting to snag a sneaky parking spot across a neighbourhood driveway. Remember to show respect to our neighbours and park responsibly even if this means you have to walk further to the school gate. Here are some further reminders about ways to stay safe when driving and parking near and around schools.
Driving and parking safely near your school
You can help keep our children safe by:
- dropping your child off and picking them up on the school side of the road
- never calling out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous
- parking responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate.
Staff car park
Remember:
- the staff car park is for staff use only
- do not use the car park to drop off or pick up your children
- teach your children to enter and exit the school grounds using the pedestrian access gates located on Langdon Rd, Buckleys Rd and Olympus St
Debating
Debating develops essential skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, research, teamwork and active listening. Students represent their schools in local and state-wide competitions. At Winston Heights we have a debating team, The Winston Heights Bears, led by Mrs Nakhoul and Miss Neilson. The debaters proudly represented our school on 18 May in a competition with Winston Hills PS. Although this time they were not victorious, I know they gave 100% effort and learnt so much in preparation for the next round. We wish them all the best as they practice and prepare for future rounds. We are proud of your achievements!
COVID Update
Just a reminder that if a child is a close contact, but is symptom free, they are allowed to come to school. You should notify the school your child is a close contact. The child should compete a RAT each morning, be negative, symptom free and encouraged to wear a mask. Additional RAT kits were distributed over the past fortnight to all families and should be used as appropriate. I thank all our families for not coming on to the school site unless necessary. Your support of our staff and students has been fantastic and very much appreciated!

P&C News
Term 2 Week 4
P&C have had a wonderful opportunity to give back to our children and school recently.
We were able to support quality learning environments, through the purchase of new Interactive panels for KT & 1V Classrooms. These 75-inch panels have now been installed and are an excellent resource our teachers.
In Term 3, we are able to support the GOT GAME Fundamental PE Program by covering 75% of the cost.
We can not do this without the generous support from YOU! To all the children, parents, carers, and grandparents that continuously help by donating or purchasing at our events and fundraisers, Thank you!
Winston Heights Public School P&C Association is on Facebook!
Our aim is to provide WHPS parents/carers with information about P&C news, events, meetings etc.
We would love the school community to follow Winston Heights Public School P&C Association Page and we welcome your involvement! Of course, please feel free to contact us directly with any feedback.
We have been so thrilled with the excitement and participation around our Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough fundraiser. We send a massive thank you to everyone who has contributed to our fundraiser so far!
🍪 Mmmm, have you seen all the scrumptious flavours on offer with our Billy G's Gourmet Cookie Dough fundraiser? There are 10 to choose from - doughn't be the one that misses out!
We think Caramel White Choc or Triple Choc are our favourites. What flavours did you choose? 😍
Don’t forget, Billy G’s Cookie Dough is entirely online, so be sure to create a profile page at www.australianfundraising.com.au to place your order.
NEW DATES
Orders close Friday 1st July.
Delivery will be Term 3, Thursday 28th July 2022.
If you would prefer to make a cash donation to the P&C Billy G’s Fundraiser without the purchase of cookie dough this can be done by sending in an envelope clearly marked with child's name and donation amount.
Uniform Shop
Great News!! The Uniform shop is now fully operational for parents and carers to purchase second hand and new items over the counter every Wednesday from 8.30am – 10am
Reminder the uniform shop does NOT have EFTPOS. Cash sales only.
Please consider donating your second-hand uniforms. Placed the washed uniform in a bag marked Uniform Shop Donation and deliver to the school office.
All orders placed online via Flexischools before 4.50PM on the Monday will be filled on Wednesday morning and the orders will be delivered to your child’s class.
Canteen
Winston Heights PS has had a long history of an active P&C Association running programmes within the school such as the bands & keyboards programmes, uniform shop, canteen and until recently a school banking programme.
Volunteer participation has been vital to enable these to go ahead.
In April 2021 at the P&C meeting all members voted on a business plan put forward to employ a Canteen Supervisor to oversee the daily running of the Winston Heights PS canteen. The P&C will be advertising for this position very soon. We will keep you informed as this process continues.
Even though there will be a paid supervisor running the canteen, volunteer participation will remain a very important part of the canteen. Volunteering at the canteen means that you can be part of your child’s school life and at this stage the P&C anticipates that up to 2 hours a day would be needed of your time. We would love you to continue volunteering in the canteen and we welcome any new parents and carers who would love to participate in keeping the canteen running.
Music
This year approximately 70 students, two teachers (Mrs Sim & Ms Lehner) and six parents of the Music Committee attended the camp recently, held at Crusaders, Galston Gorge. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, one which could not take place without the dedication and commitment of our teachers, parents, tutors and band master. Thank you!
