The Bettler Buzz

January 11-15, 2016

Welcome Back!

We have had an excellent start to 2016! With the start of 2016 have come many improvements to our classroom. We're introducing new things and makings some changes to make our classroom the best it can be. The newsletter this week will highlight many (if not all) of these changes, so it is a little lengthy. Please take the time to read it in its entirety. I really appreciate your effort to be involved and informed of what's going on in our classroom!

What We're Learning This Week

Reading- Characteristics of folktales; points of view of various characters and how characters respond to challenges

Word Study- -aw/-au/-ay word families

FRY Words (students are expected to read and spell these words): caught, cause, day, law, lay, may, pay, saw, say, stay, way

Math- Moving from measuring in nonstandard units to measuring in inches

Social Studies- Martin Luther King Jr.

Writing- opinion writing about favorite sports using reasons to support opinions

Report Cards

Report cards will go home Friday, Please review your child's report card and keep it in your records. Return the signed envelope in your child's Friday Folder. Thank you!

Field Trip This Friday

Our in-school field trip will be this Friday at 1:00. Just a reminder so you won't check your kids out and miss the show!

We are all making an effort to be more healthy this year! Please make sure your child has a healthy breakfast each morning whether they eat at home, bring breakfast to school, or buy breakfast at school. If possible, send your child with a healthy snack each day.

Wish List

Believe it or not, we have blown through some of the supplies you sent in at the beginning of the year. Please consider donating some of the following supplies to our classroom.

1) Eraser caps or large erasers

2) Bandaids

3) Black dry-erase markers

We have plenty of pencils from the beginning of the year, however many are unsharpened. If you have an electric pencil sharpener at home and would be willing to sharpen a box or two at home, that would really lighten our load at school. Please email me if you're able to help us out in this way.

Thank you so much for your support!

I will be starting BYOD more purposefully with our class starting this nine weeks. In your child's Friday Folders I'll be sending home a permission slip for BYOD as well as a page with some skills your child should have before bringing their device to school. Some of you signed this form at the beginning of the year, however I am asking you to sign it again. The majority of forms I received at the beginning of the year were missing critical information.

If you are sending your child with their BYOD permission slip, PLEASE be sure that you include the type of device, serial number, and description. If the device information is missing, I will have to send the permission slip back home and your child will not be allowed to use their device at school until I receive that information.

I'll be sending more information about how we will be using BYOD in our classroom in the coming weeks. If you have any questions, please email me!

Family and Friends Lunch

You are invited to join us for our annual Family and Friends lunch on Wednesday, February 17 at 10:30am. Please plan for someone special to attend to eat lunch with your child on that day.

Due to the Family and Friends lunch day for other grade levels, our lunch time will be affected on the following days: February 3 and February 10. Please do not plan to eat with your child on these days as we will be following our early release lunch schedule and eating in the room. Thank you!

About Ms. Bettler

This is my second year at Gwin Oaks - and I LOVE it here! I am so greatful to be part of such a wonderful community.

My family means the world to me. We are all very close. We love going to Disney World - my brother and I are huge roller coaster junkies and nostalgic 20-somethings. We also love playing with our bichon frise puppy, Sophie. She is such a trouble maker! In June 2016 I'll add on an extension to the family when I marry my fiancee, David!

Music is a very important part of my life. I have been playing piano since I was six years old. I have also been involved in some sort of choir or band since fifth grade.

As a teacher, my goal is to make sure that students know how valuable they are! It's not about if a child is smart, but HOW a child is smart. I strive to help each child see their own potential to make a difference in this world and give them the tools to succeed.
