Parkside Elementary Fourth Grade

February 15th - 19th, 2016

Literacy/Reading

We are having a quick check (quiz) on Monday, February 15, 2016 on author's purpose and using the R.A.C.E. strategy to write a constructed response. On Friday, February 19, 2016 the entire grade level will be having a Mock Literacy EOG test from 10:00-12:35pm. Be sure students get plenty of rest and eat a decent breakfast. Remind them to use testing and reading strategies they have learned.

The test will cover the informational text standards we have been working on for the last few months- Describe the overall structure of a text (RI 4.5), Explain how an author uses reason and evidence to support particular points in a text (RI 4.8) and Interpret information presented orally or quantitatively and explain how it contributes to understanding the text it accompanies (RI 4.7).

Don't forget that homework for reading is changing slightly. Students are still expected to read nightly (should be able to read 40 minutes by now) but rather than completing a reading log with questions, students and parents will simply write in the agenda the book that was read for homework and parents sign with initials. Include page numbers, too. This will serve as the nightly log. Students will also need to complete between 2 and 4 Compass Learning activities during the week.

Math

This week in math we will be finishing up our Area and Perimeter unit with our test on Tuesday, February 16th. We will begin our Geometry unit on Wednesday. Your child will begin to explore the many aspects of lines, angles, and shapes that make up our world. Ask your child about the vocabulary that they are working on. It will be important that they know and understand the key vocabulary terms of this unit. This week we will focus on building vocabulary and measuring angles. Don't forget that your child has EOG Practice homework each week. This homework is due on Friday. Take some time to go over these problems with your child. It is a perfect way too see what kind of questions your child will need to be able to answer on the End-of-Grade test.

Science, Social Studies and Health

Students will be taking a Health test this Wednesday on Tobacco and Alcohol. We have been discussing the effects of both on the body and systems. The science interactive notebook will be coming home with a study guide.

In Science we are starting our Electricity Unit. Students will be able to use batteries, wires and bulbs to make series and parallel circuits. We will also be learning the vocabulary which includes closed circuit, open circuit and short circuit. Students will be writing in their notebooks to prepare for a later assessment.

We just finished the Civil War and learning about Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman. I have been reading about the Underground Railroad and showing the different perspectives, Your child has learned so much about how North Carolina was involved in the North versus the South War. (Ask them about a "pup tent".

Box Tops

The Box Tops for Education Program is an easy way to earn money for our school.
The classroom that collects the most Box Tops by February 26th will earn extra recess time!

Below are 4 easy ways you can help:
#1. Clip – Clip the Box Tops labels from hundreds of participating products and send them to school each one is worth 10 cents when our school redeems them from Box Tops for Education. (Turn in Box Tops by attaching them to the collection sheets provided by your child’s teacher or by placing them in a bag clearly labeled with your child’s name, child’s teacher and grade).
Sign up to support our school at www.boxtops4education.com where you can.

#2. Shop Online – Shop at your favorite online stores through the Box Tops Marketplace ( boxtops4education.com/marketplace ). Our school can earn eBoxTops with every qualifying perchance you make, at no additional cost to you. You can still use your coupons codes and promotional offers! eBoxTops credited 1-5 days.

#3. Click & Earn – Earn eBoxTops by watching a short commercial, answering short surveys, and other promotions. Opportunities are updated every 1 – 2 months. (Click on the “earn menu” – “click & earn” sub menu)

#4 – Bonus Box Tops - Enter online promotions for chances to win eBoxTops and other prizes:
Print coupons for your favorite Box Top brands
See how much our school is earning with Box Tops
Sign up for Box Tops email newsletters that will keep you updated on the program, and for Marketplace newsletters that include offers from online retailers where you can earn eBox Tops.

Thanks for choosing to make a difference for our school with Box Tops! For more information and/or questions you can email Angela Webster at angwebnc@gmail.com

Parkside Handprint

We are building a tile wall to decorate our school and to commemorate the first students to ever attend Parkside Elementary. It is our goal for every Parkside student and/or family to purchase a brand new handprint tile with the students first and last name to place on the family wall.

Last day to purchase a tile is February 26th.

If you’d like to order your child’s tile, simply fill out the blue order form that came home in your child’s Thursday folder. (Additional forms are available in the front office). Cost per tile: 1 = $25.00; Additional Tiles =$20.00 per tile.
