How Many Horses

Horse power is about what they had to use in the late 1800's. They didn't event engins yet so they used horses. Watt wanted to start selling his new evention the steam engin.

But he had to figure out how to discribe them.

Steam Engins?

Our ponies now can do 22,000 ft-lb of work in a minute. Watt determined that since a horse is probably 1.5 times more powerful than a pony he took 22,000 times 1.5 and called it 1 horsepower. In other words, 1 horsepower is 33,000 ft-lb of work. So our horses now can lift a 550 lb load a distance of 1 foot in 1 second.
