Gee, It's Geometry!
Most math groups have moved onto the study of geometry. Our academic focus will be on the following standards:
- Identify and describe the following: cube, sphere, prism, pyramid, cone, and cylinder.
- Understand that shapes (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize and draw rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals. Recognize and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
- Identify, describe and draw points, lines and line segments using appropriate tools (e.g., ruler, straightedge, and technology), and use these terms when describing two-dimensional shapes.
Ag Day
As you know, the Farm Bureau Ag Day is on Wednesday, April 11. Part of the day will spent outdoors, so your student will need to dress appropriately for the weather. Keep in mind that this includes footwear that is appropriate for walking around in the livestock barns.
On this day, your child will need a packed lunch in a disposable bag, unless one has been requested from the school cafeteria. Coolers will not be provided, so please pack items that do not need to be kept cool. Chocolate milk will be available for students to drink if needed.
Final Book Project: Timeline
We are approaching our final at home book project of the year, the timeline. Your child has been instructed to select a book from our school library from the "Who Was...?" series, which--as you would guess--is a biography. After reading the book, (s)he is to create a timeline of important events in the book. The details are as follows:
- Include at least 10 important events from the book
- Each event should include a title that explains the event and a picture. Pictures may be drawn or printed.
- Your timeline should include dates
- Include the title of the book and the author on the timeline
- Neatness counts!
This long term book project addresses the following Indiana Academic standards in language arts and social studies:
- Identify how a nonfiction text can be structured to put events in chronological order.
- Create simple timelines that identify important events.
COSI On Wheels
COSI On Wheels, a portable dynamic hands-on science center, is coming to our school, but we need your help! Would you be willing to volunteer your time toward this all-day event that introduces science topics to our entire school on Wednesday, April 25? This day begins with a high-energy assembly followed by exciting, interactive, hands-on activities. Don't worry. You will be well-trained by COSI staff to present this exciting information to our kiddos. If you are willing to assist, please call the school office and let us know.
Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program
Your child is bringing home a cabbage plant today. Information about this cabbage growing program, including an informative parent video, is included in the folder and may also be accessed here. Once your child's cabbage is fully grown, you may enter it in a contest that could make you eligible to win a $1,000 scholarship towards education and statewide recognition as your state's cabbage program winner. Happy planting and good luck!!!!
Library Schedule Changes
Don't forget...Mrs. Grissom is going to be out of the library again this coming Friday. As a result, students will need to return or renew their books on Thursday, April 12th.
Basket Bash
I want to thank those of you who donated toward our class basket for the upcoming Basket Bash on April 19. We have assembled a "Grillin' and Chillin'" basket featuring a Weber Smokey Joe table top grill and all of the accessories needed for a good old-fashioned BBQ. Again, we couldn't have done it without you!
Next Week's Share Topic
POETRY!!!! April is National Poetry Month. You may write your own poem or read or memorize one that is your favorite to share with the class. Think about some visual aids or props that would make your poem “come alive,” because props are necessary for students to receive full credit for the weekly share topic.
Texas Roadhouse Fundraiser
On April 10, the LES PTO will hold a fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse from 4-8 p.m. Texas Roadhouse will donate 10% of the total food purchases from LES PTO family and friends. The flyer that was sent in the Friday folder on March 16th (or the mini-flyer in today's folder) must be presented in order for the PTO to receive the 10% donation. Please let me know if you if you need more. The money earned will be used towards the purchase of new playground equipment. Here's the best part: KIDS UNDER 12 EAT FREE!
