Foundations of Writing for Students with Complex Needs
Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Training and Consultation Team for this virtual training series.
Participants will:
- be introduced to the building blocks of writing
- connect the PA Core Standards for Writing to the Alternate Eligible Content (AEC) and to the PASA DLM Essential Elements.
- assess and analyze student progress
- apply at least one evidence-based strategy for the emergent and/or conventional writer into daily routines by creating a writing portfolio.
Intended Audience: K-12 Special Education Teachers, Transition Coordinators, Paraeducators, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational, & Physical Therapists
Registration Details
A total of 9 Act 48 hours may be earned.
- It is highly recommended to attend all sessions in the series; however, partial Act 48 credits will be available.
Speech / Language Pathologists seeking ASHA CEUs for this presentation should contact AIU ASHA CEU Administrator, Eileen Cirelli, (eileen.cirelli@aiu3.net) within one week of completing each course offering.
Spring Series
Registration Deadline for Spring Series: January 20, 2023
Session Overview: This session will include information on the foundations of working with students who have complex needs, writing in daily routines, and what research says about writing. Participants will explore the connections of the PA Common Core State Standards, the PA Alternate Eligible Content, and the Dynamic Learning Maps Essential Elements for writing.

Day 2: Emergent Writing
Session Overview: This session is designed to explore emergent writing in accordance with the developmental writing scale, purposes of writing, and sections of the student's writing portfolio. Participants will align an emergent writing activity to PA Core Standard Benchmarks and choose an alternate pencil to support active engagement in the writing process.

Day 3: Conventional Writing
Session Overview: This session is created for participants to explore writing strategies for the conventional writer in accordance with the developmental writing scale, choose a conventional writing activity that aligns to a benchmark and PA Core Standard, and explore assistive technology tools for the student to use to engage in the writing activity.
