PBS Focus of the Week -
Thank you for helping our students make the best decisions through continued reteaching, practice and feedback/praise!
PBS data update:
We saw a decrease in the number of referrals for December.
Disrespect and disruption are are two most frequent behaviors.
In grades k-2 the greatest number of referrals come from time in specials.
In grades 3-5 the greatest number of referrals come from lunch/recess time.
Our Character Trait for the month is Hardworking/Motivation

Collective Commitment of the Week
- We will communicate clear expectations in writing.
How do we communicate with parents in a way that lets them know about our high expectations? How do we share this with our community?
Rigor and Relevance
Remember to look for ways to stretch students to do more cognitive heavy lifting. We don't want students stuck on an escalator!
How are you framing learning for students to make it relevant? Are you asking students to tell you how they can connect their learning to other concepts within a discipline or across disciplines?
When given the time to reflect and discuss, what connections are students making between current learning and previous learning? between current learning and the "real world"?
This video was found and shared with me, relating to the Rigor, Relevance, Relationship framework that we have been talking about. Central Dauphin School District in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, (11,000 students and 900 staff) embarked on a similar journey in the spring of 2013. In looking at their own student data CDSD found areas...."needing improvement included the methods of delivering instruction in the classrooms and the current state of the district curriculum. These shortcomings were not found to be the fault of the classroom teachers, but rather a system-wide effort to focus on test scores at the expense of a rigorous and relevant educational experience in every classroom." A report I found on their district website detailed processes nearly identical to what JCPS has just begun.
They partnered with Scholastic Achievement Partners in part of which included William Daggett and ICLE. I believe this video may have been their back to school video for the 2015-2016 school year. We are on a journey....together....this is not a one year expedition..... I wanted you to know others have and are successfully traveling the same path we are. "What will have the greatest impact on our students....WE WILL!" Thank you for all that you do!
Reminders
*Be aware that all students must take the SRI (FRA for kindergarten only) by January 22nd.
*Grades need to be updated each week in Infinite Campus.
*Thank you to those who have already taken some time to brighten our hallways with student work on bulletin boards. Please take time to spruce up your hallway bulletin board in the next week!
*Complete all district required videos by February 1st. You have received multiple reminders in Friday Focuses and an email from Central Office.
Student-Led Conferences - Expectations
1. Teachers will work with students so they are prepared to lead parents through activities/stations that showcase their skills.
2. Teachers will be "a station" so that all parents will have a chance to talk with the teacher about student progress. You can structure this as you wish (data binder station, writing station, or just a work sample/progress report station).
