Roger William was banished and was to be sent to England. Yet he fled into the the woods and was found by Indians. Roger Williams founded the city of Rhode Island in the spring of 1636. From there the church was separate from the government. In 1644 he was able to gain charter from parliament which gives Rhode Island legal status. Roger Williams created this colony for anyone to join and practice whichever religion they like.
