The Patriot Act
Speaker-Iowa Public TV
Occasion-September 11, 2001
Purpose-Convince us that the Patriot Act is Unconstitutional
Subject-The Patriot Act
The Iowa Public TV is effective in convincing young Americans that introducing the Patriot Act in response to September 11, 2001 is unconstitutional because of its use of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.
The documentary utilizes Ethos in many instances, however, its most prominent use is showing us the titles of the speakers. We are shown many high ranking and highly esteemed individuals who are speaking about this topic. Some of these positions are Former Attorney General, Former Deputy Assistant on Terrorism, and Head of the ACLU. Its use of Ethos is very effective in showing that their speakers are knowledgeable on the subject and should be trusted.
Next, the Documentary utilizes instances of Pathos. It brings these to us in the way of American flags in the background, sad music playing, and asking us what we're willing to fight for to obtain freedom. All of these are to appeal to our love and emotion for our country. It makes us think about how much we are willing to devote ourselves to it and how much we will sacrifice for it.
Lastly, the Documentary utilizes Logos. It gives us situations where logically the Patriot Act is Unconstitutional. Such as, if a CIA Agent can follow you into your home without your permission or any reason to, he is invading your personal space and is technically trespassing.
