Teacher Talk
I love your children. They. Are. Perfect.
When I write that your children are perfect, I really mean that. They have earned over 25 class star cards for showing Star Stallion behaviors. These stars are earned from me, from other teachers, and adults who notice them making great choices.
Everyone is thinking of what type of reward our class should have for this accomplishment. We will discuss and vote on Monday. Stay tuned!
I sent home a form as "parent homework" on Friday. Please return it to me as soon as possible. I use your information to help create our first conference together. (I'm also bribing everyone with a surprise for returning it!!)
Student Council information went home on Friday as well. Read and talk this over thoughtfully with your child. I sent info home with students who wanted to explore this new privilege. This is voluntary. All forms are due the 21st.
Please join PTA!!!
Here is the link to join Sommer PTA.

Concepts We'll Study:
Writing Workshop: Our writings this week will tie into Celebrate Freedom Week studies.
Science: We took our first science DCA on Friday. Everyone was nervous but after the test, they discussed how it wasn't so scary. They had seen everything on the test in labs so it was familiar. Next up, we'll be exploring how heat causes changes in matter. We'll turn solids into liquids, make liquids into solids, and have a bit of fun with gases....
Math: I have thrown the class into a knot! I've requested that everyone solve problems using any strategy but the standard algorithm: 234 + 154 lined up vertically so you can add the ones, then the tens, and finally the hundreds. It's been a challenge for many mathematicians but they are starting to get the hang of decomposing numbers so they can play with different values. Everyone is also getting quite proficient at seeing patterns in numbers and learning the trickier aspects of place value (trading, watching for too many of a certain base ten block, expanded notation broken into smaller units).
Social Studies: This week is Celebrate Freedom Week. We will learn about why our country was founded and our nation’s most important documents, which provide the foundation for our government. We'll study the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, our history as a nation of immigrants, The Emancipation Proclamation, and women's suffrage. Whew! We are going to be busy!
