What is Summary and Main Idea?

Summary is a shortened version of a longer reading that tells the basic ideas of a the text. It includes only the most important details.


Main idea is what the text is mainly about. To determine the main idea:

1. Read the text and ask yourself, "what is this mostly about."

2. Look at the title & pictures.

3. Look for clue words that are used repeatedly.
