m-step michigan student test of educational progress

Dear Fancher Families:

Thank you for allowing Fancher Elementary to be part of your child’s education. Fancher Elementary students will be taking Michigan’s statewide test the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress).

We want your child’s experience to be relaxed, healthy, enjoyable, and stress-free. Your positive and supportive manner and outlook going into these assessments will have a tremendous impact on your child’s experience, too.

Fancher has worked hard to establish the best testing environment possible for your child. The online M-Step will be given in your child’s classroom, using Chromebooks.

During the M-Step testing period, please keep the following in mind:

  • Early bedtimes! Get a good night’s rest!

  • Eat a healthy breakfast……brain power!

  • Have perfect attendance and arrive at school on time! (Testing will be scheduled based on the daily specials schedule and communicated by the classroom teacher for each class)

(Students tend to do best when they participate in testing with their class).

  • Be positive! Encourage your child to do his or her best….but not to be stressed!

  • Your child’s teacher will communicate about parental involvement for classroom snacks during testing breaks.

Book Vending Machine

Thanks to the partnership of our local bookstore, Sleepy Dog Books, and Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe 2% grant - Fancher Elementary now has a Book Vending Machine at school. Students are earning gold coins to select a high interest book of their choice, for meeting and achieving goals! The goal could be an academic achievement, an improvement in behavior, showcasing SOAR, or anything else Fancher Staff want to recognize a student for. Students and staff are very excited about the new addition.

Illness Reminders

For the health and safety of our staff and students - it is very important every morning families are screening their own child before sending them to school for the day.
  • Temperature of 100.4 degrees
  • Sore Throat
  • New uncontrolled cough causing difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • New onset of severe headache, especially with fever

Please continue to communicate with your child's building of any new situations that affect your family by calling us at 989-775-2260 or emailing Mrs. Wendi Chaffin at wchaffin@mp.edzone.net.

If your child is not feeling well and/or going to be absent, please call the school, and we will contact their teacher to let them know of the absence.

Please Label your Student's Items

We would love to see our lost & found items claimed, but also to keep the lost & found to a minimum. Families can help us by LABELING EVERYTHING!

Use a permanent marker to label your child's name on lunchboxes, school supplies, backpacks, water bottles, child's clothes (utilize the inside tags of sweatshirts, jackets, shoes, and snowpants). We will periodically check labels and post pictures of items to be claimed - check out the Fancher Facebook page.

Send an extra pair of clothes to stay in your student's locker, place in a ziplock bag or plastic grocery bag, label with their name.

Pokemon Cards, Toys, and Electronics

Friendly reminder from our Student Handbook at the front of your student's agenda - toys, trading cards, and pokemon cards should be left at home. We want to make sure things are not lost or stolen at school - and we can best do this by leaving items home. pg. 3 of Handbook

Electronic Devices

Such as cell phones, iPods, cameras, tablets are strongly recommended to be left at home, they are not permitted on our playground or in a student's desk during the school day. If the objects are at school they need to remain safely tucked away in backpacks from 8:40am to 3:49pm.

Emergency Safety Drills

Last week students and staff practiced another lockdown DRILL, where a uniformed officer comes into the building wearing a bright green vest to represent the threat. Any student or staff member who sees the green vest notifies the closest adult to place the building into lockdown mode for the DRILL. Our students and staff did an excellent job with this, we were secured quickly, an all call announcement is made and 911 is notified of our drill.

During the school year, our buildings are obligated to practice at least 5 Fire Drills, 2 Tornado Drills and 3 Lockdown drills. At times, we do have our YSU Liason or other police officers from the Police Department assist in our drills. We cover with our students the locations of where to go for each drill, what to do during specific drills, and how to properly evacuate when it is needed. You can also find this information in your child's Handbook in the front of the student agenda.

I encourage you to check out our district website where we have information that pertains to our district school safety. Click here to get to the website.
