M-Step Parent Letter
March, 2019
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Michigan Department of Education’s annual state testing will begin in April, when we return from Spring Break. Students in the State of Michigan take a combination of M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress), PSAT 8/9 and SAT.
· Students in grades 3, 4, 6, and 7 will take the mathematics and ELA M-STEP assessments.
· Students in grade 5 will take the mathematics, ELA, social studies and pilot science M-STEP assessments.
· Students in grade 8 will take the PSAT 8/9, which replaces the ELA and math portion of the M-STEP. Eight graders will still take the social studies M-STEP and the pilot science M-STEP assessments.
· Students in grade 11 will continue to take the Michigan Merit Exam, which includes the SAT, the social studies M-STEP and the pilot science M-STEP assessments.
M-STEP is an untimed, online assessment, students will take using Chromebooks or computers in their school’s computer lab. Students will take the following state assessments during the designated testing windows:
Grades
M-STEP Tests Given
State’s Testing Window
Each window was extended an additional week by the State, due to the number of snow/cold days this year.
3, 4, 6 and 7
ELA (Reading, Writing), Math
April 29 - May 31
5
ELA (Reading, Writing), Math, Science, Social Studies
April 8 - May 10
8 and 11
Science, Social Studies, in addition to PSAT and SAT
April 8 - May 10
Students will not test every day during the testing window. Each school is creating a schedule to allow for minimum disruption to teaching and learning. Specific test dates will be available through your child’s school.
More information about M-STEP is also available on the State of Michigan Department of Education (MDE) website: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/2017_MDE_Assessment_System_What_it_is_flyer_final_jl_597162_7.pdf
The MDE is conducting a statewide science field test that began during the spring 2018. The science field test, which is based on Michigan's new science academic standards, will be administered to all students in grades 5, 8, and 11. This is a change from previous years when the Science M-STEP was administered at grades 4 and 7. The spring science field test will count towards the participation requirement in Michigan’s state and federal accountability system, but science proficiency will not be calculated.
The social studies test that is administered will have two parts at grades 5 and 8 and one part at grade 11. It is similar to tests in previous years with multiple choice, interactive computer questions, and short written responses.
To preview the M-STEP online assessment in ELA and Math, visit this website using Google Chrome as your browser: https://wbte.drcedirect.com/MI/portals/mi/. Click on M-STEP On-Line Tools Training and choose the grade level you would like to preview.
Teachers prepare students for the M-STEP by teaching our district’s curriculum for ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies. Also, teachers have explored the test items and provided their students an opportunity to practice grade-level specific online sample items.
For additional information on M-STEP administration at your child’s school, please talk with your student’s teacher and/or school principal.
Sincerely,
Theresa O’Brien
