Reading & Language Workshop

Readers are currently working in their first Literature Discussion Group (LDG) of their 4th grade year! This is exciting for everyone, as the kids are able to read common text, and have rich conversation that is centered around a prompt. Ask your child what they are reading, and if they can show you their calendar for the book. Are they keeping up with their reading assignments? Are they taking time to write think marks to show their thinking as they read? Are they answering the prompt in their notebooks and uploading them on Book Creator? These are questions to ask your child to ensure that they are on the right track, and able to be an active member of the group when meeting day happens! Tha

Language Workshop Learners have begun Unit 2 - Discovery. We will be reading books about famous musicians who discovered a particular type of music or genre. How did their discovery impact humanity? We will find out! Our first book is about Duke Ellington. Ask your child how Duke Ellington got his start and what challenges he had to overcome.

Writing Workshop

This week our first writing unit, myths comes to a close. Students have chosen a topic and developed the traits of their character and elaborated on the setting. Our students are learning that Good writers are not born that way: Like any other skill in life, it is true that some people are naturally better writers than others. However, good writers, even those who write professionally, have worked hard to become better at the craft. The truth is that any writer, at any level, can become a better writer by learning what good writing consists of and spending time at practicing the craft. As we continue the process of adding to our story, students learn to develop the skills necessary to be a skillful writer. Talk to your child about their writing project, they are pretty creative!!

Math Workshop

With the coming summative assessment on factors, multiples, prime and composite next week Tuesday, the first unit of 4th grade math comes to a close. Unit 2 will have your mathematician working on place value, rounding and addition and subtraction of whole numbers. These concepts will include 6 digit numbers (up to a million).

Students have been working on our online math program “Matific”. Matific develops mathematical excellence and problem-solving skills through playful interaction and games. It focuses on improving core skills such as addition, subtraction, division, multiplication and many more. We are excited for students to use this program.
