Principal's Update
Dear Lakeview Families,
As we all start the new year Lakeview will be continuing to support all of our students in moving towards becoming the students we know they are and can become. Students that are not only academically sound but resilient and able to adapt to new learning. We will be spending our time reviewing data to make instructional decisions, consulting with reading and math coaches and intentionally planning. These efforts will be part of our plan to be prepared for FSA and next grade levels. It is hard to believe but in terms of school days – we have about 90 days until the end of the year. Thank you in advance for supporting Lakeview in our endeavors towards academic growth.
Warm regards,
Tijuana Baker

Thank you, Lakeview families, for giving the first-grade pod some international flair for the new year. We asked you to share how to say “Happy New Year” in your native languages – and boy, did you deliver! We featured 20 languages in addition to English. We are teaching our students to be contributing, responsible citizens in a global community, and this was the perfect reminder that it’s a small world after all!

Hello Lakeview Families!
I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break and came back refreshed in 2020!
The character trait for January is Self-Motivation. Those students who are self-motivated will work in a careful and consistent manner without giving up.
Growth Mindset – Parents and students having a growth mindset is beneficial to our ability to persevere when tasks get difficult and to be self-motivated. You can help your child develop it by doing these 5 things:
1. Verbally praise kids for skills that don’t sound predetermined, such as showing hard work and being persistent, instead of being smart.
2. Be a role model with growth mindset. Pay attention to comments that you say starting with “I can’t…”. Make sure to end the sentence with “yet”.
3. Encourage your child to embrace challenges with learning new things. One deeper/harder question is better for growing the brain than a sheet full of questions that he/she knows the answer to.
4. Remember growth mindset isn’t just academic; it applies to many areas of life (athletic, musical, social). Discuss the next step for improvement if your child is having difficulty in an area of their life.
5. Discourage envy of peers and talk to your child about what he or she can learn from others who appear more successful. While skills may come more easily to some, most often there’s a (possibly unseen) element of practice, persistence, and hard work which leads to achievement.
Here are recommendations for a few YouTube videos that I have found regarding growth mindset. You can watch these with your kids and have discussions after. The first three are songs for younger kids.
· Sesame Street do Growth Mindset
· Sesame Street: Episode #4520 Power of Yet
· One Thousand Steps Song
· Growth Mindset Video
· Growth mindset changed his life
· Learnstorm Growth Mindset: The truth about your brain
· Yoda Quote: Do it or do not – there’s no try!
· Famous Failures
· Michael Jordan “Failure” Nike Commercial
Have a wonderful start to the New Year! As always, if you have a concern about your student at school, you can email me at altmank@pcsb.org and we can work together to decide the next steps.
Sincerely, Mrs. Kari Altman-Wood
News from the Library
Parents of 5th graders: Your students have a unique opportunity to study, train and test for Microsoft certification, something usually only available to Middle School students. Interested 5th grade students have been given applications for a club that will start Thursday, January 23rd at 7:45am in the library. Motivated students may participate without attending the club but will need to make arrangements to meet with Ms. Smith. The program is a self-paced one in which students take ownership of their own progress, collaborate with the other club members or counsel with Ms. Smith if they encounter challenges that they need help with. Qualifying students will be sponsored with a $50 voucher to take the certification test when they are ready usually in late April or May. They must finish before the school year ends. Only 20 students will be accepted.
Contact Ms. Smith - email smithsar@pcsb.org if an application has not made it home.

Conference Week- February 3-7
Dear Lakeview Families,
The second round of required face to face conferences will be taking place the week of
February 3, 2020 – February 7, 2020. In order to have a more efficient process to schedule
these conferences Lakeview will be using electronic scheduling through Sign Up Genius.
Teachers will be creating individual links for each of their classrooms that will be sent to you
via the distribution lists that they already have in place. By clicking on the link, you will be able
to schedule the day and time for your conference. Please look for the link to be emailed to you on January 21, 2020, between the hours of 3 and 4 p.m. I also suggest writing the day and time down, but you will receive a reminder of your scheduled conference via Sign Up Genius.
If your email address has changed or you do not have access to a computer or other electronic
devices, please contact your child’s teacher. Signing up needs to take place by January 28, 2020,
by 3:00 p.m. If no sign up has taken place by that time you will be assigned a time and it will be sent home to you as a sign and return document. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tijuana Baker
