From the Principal - Mike Jackson
And so, our seniors our sitting their NCEA exams. It has been a difficult year for them, in lots of ways, but particularly around the issues with Covid, illness, disrupted classes, staff away, and the ongoing malaise that has struck much of the country. It is very hard to be positive, engaged and focused with so much going on around you most of it negative.
I really am concerned for our young people and wish them all the very best over the coming few weeks. Students are eligible for the additional Covid credits which will help, but they don’t make up for all of the disruption and mental stress that students have been under.
Having said that we had a wonderful senior prizegiving, a big thank you to Minister of Justice Kiritapu Allan, and our guest speaker and ex-student Wayne Pamment. It is always an emotionally charged time as we recognise our students’ achievements and farewell many of the.
The ‘minor’ works have all but finished now, apart from a few small jobs to be done, and the Major Capital works are due to start in a couple of weeks. It will be great to see this major project finally kick-off.
Teacher Only Days
We have only had 4 full weeks of school left for our junior students, and the week of the 28th of November will be very disrupted with two Nationwide teacher-only days for NCEA – Monday the 28th of November and Friday the 2nd of December. Teachers will be spending the day in professional development planning for the changes coming in all subject areas for NCEA. Students will not be in school on those days. Adding to the disrupted week there is a Paid Teacher Union meeting on Wednesday afternoon for teachers to hear about and discuss the new Secondary Teachers Collective Agreement pay offer. So students will not be at school in the afternoon on Wednesday.
Junior Prizegiving is on Tuesday the 13 of December and you are all cordially invited to come along and celebrate your student's success.
