Counselor's Corner
I had the privilege of visiting the kindergarten and first grade classrooms this week and presenting Second Steps lessons. We focused on the steps to take to calm down when experiencing strong feelings. We reviewed that students first need to stop (to think about how they are feeling) and name how they are feeling. Students can then use a strategy to calm down further. We focused on using the strategy of belly breathing this week to further calm down. I enjoyed visiting your child's classroom and look forward to visiting again soon!

Cafe News
Please make sure your child has sufficient money in their lunch account.
You can pay online with efunds or send cash/check in with your child. If you are sending money in, please put it in an envelope with your child's first and last name, student ID number and their teacher. Student ID numbers can be written in the memo line of checks. Please do not use nicknames or just your child's first name. Remind your child to turn the envelope in to their teacher.
When having lunch with your child please remember to not bring in fast food for yourself or your child due to various allergies students may have. You can certainly bring a lunch for home or purchase a lunch at the Café.

Lost and Found
Harrison Parkway Elementary has a Lost & Found located outside of the Music Room for any lost items. At the end of each month, we will be donating any leftover items to charities that serve people in need.
We have a lot of items starting to accumulate on the table. Please have your student check it out if they are missing items.
Media Center
Note from the Nurse
According to the calendar, SPRING has offically arrived so please keep these tips in mind...
Water! Water! Water!!! Please encourage your child to drink water. It helps rejuvenate and flush the body system, and with the air so dry, it keeps the body hydrated decreasing nose bleeds.
Remind your child to take the time to Wash! Wash! Wash your hands!!! It truly helps stop germs from spreading.
Fever: If your child has a fever > 100.0, they MUST stay home for 24 hrs fever free without use of fever reducing medicine.
Vomiting: Any student who has vomited due to illness must stay home from school and must be vomit free for 24 hrs before returning to school
Recess: All students are expected to participate in recess each day. District Policy states that the students will go outside if the temperature is above 15 degrees with the wind chill factored in. Students not able to participate may bring a note from home or from their physician. School policy only allows a student to use a note from home for three days, after which the parent note must be replaced by a Dr’s note. Parents need to communicate any recess excuse to the nurse and the teacher. So PLEASE, dress your child appropriately with coats, hats and mittens. You can take layers off but you can't put them on if you don't have them!
Extra Clothes: If you have any extra clothes that you can send in to the clinic, we would greatly appreciate them.
Report a Student Absence
If your child will be absent from school, please contact us at (317) 915-4210. You may call and leave a message on our attendance line anytime before 8:00 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., our office staff will be available to speak with you and document your child's absence. It is important to let us know your child will be absent or late arrival prior to 9:00 a.m.
If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, please make sure you also contact the office by phone or email (apowell@hse.k12.in.us) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Safe Visitor Badges
Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their Safe Visitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the Safe Visitor App (IPhone) or have your badge ready and available to be scanned when you come into the school office. The app is in Google Play for other types of phones. To find the Safe Visitor app, search for “SafeVisitor” (there is no space in between the words).
Looking up names can lead to the wrong person being signed in. Upon leaving, please let the office staff know so they can sign you out.
If you have questions/concerns or need to have your badge re-emailed to you, please contact -Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
