in the 1800's america figured out it is cheaper to hire slaves than to buy slaves plus they wouldn't revolt as much than if they were slaves and that helped plantation owners get rich that way

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century enslaved people of African descent in the United States in efforts to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause.

Buxton Canada

North Buxton is a rural community located in Southwestern OntariocIt was established in 1849 as a community for and by former African-American slaves who escaped to Canada to gain freedom

The houses had to built at least 24x18x12x feet with a porch across each house had to be 33 feet away from the road purchasing land in Buxton cost 2.50 per acre

In 1857 the total student population of the school was 140 student
