ROBERTSVILLE REVIEW
November
Message from the Principal
Greetings Ram Nation,
We are well on our way through the second quarter, and it is hard to believe that we are quickly approaching Thanksgiving. The students and staff continue to work very hard to close out our first semester on a great note. Please be informed of one particular concern, the inappropriate use of social media, that recently is causing some issues. We are seeing issues arise outside of the school day on applications such as Snapchat, that are working their way back to the school building. I believe this is a battle that we must fight together, thus I would simply ask parents to engage in conversation with their student regarding the student’s social media life, and take an active role in monitoring the use of electronic devices. Students have unlimited learning potential at their fingertips, and at this point that can do so many positive things. However, there is certainly a downside to the ease of accessing information and connection to communication. To that end, I would encourage parents to attend a Cyber Bullying seminar on Monday, November 12 from 6:00-7:30 PM in the RMS Auditorium. This session is for parents only, and looks to provide great information on a very important topic.
Thank you again for your support this year. As always, if you have any concerns regarding your student, please contact the front office.
I want to close by wishing your families a very happy Thanksgiving. I am truly grateful for the RMS and ORS communities and how both have embraced my family.
Climb the Mountain,
Kirk W. Renegar Ed. D.

PTSA - Autumn Update
Autumn Update
Can you believe we are almost at the end of the first half of the school year? Neither can we! So many exciting things have been happening around RMS in collaboration with your PTSA that we wanted to give you an update.
We want to start by saying Thank You!!!! – to all of our parents, students, and families for your ongoing support through donations and your time to so many of our events. Because of your support our Welcome Back Luncheon for our Teachers and Staff was fantastic and there was hardly any food left over! We were so excited to offer our teachers, especially our new teachers, classroom supplies they always need but may not have enough of (paper towels, tissues, pencils, pens, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes…). Along with this was the 770 orientation packets that our amazing student and parent volunteers help put together in time for our first day of school. This was the largest stuffing of envelopes event we’ve had!!!
Our SpiritGear Drive was one of the most successful in recent years as was our Fall Intercession, again because of the time and donations you provided. And, thank you to our Oak Ridge Home Depot for a fun and interactive field trip for our students during Fall Intercession.
Another activity where you helped out – our Fall Book Fair and Author Visit– our Library and Media staff are very appreciative for all the assistance you offered by working the book fair and donating cookies and sweets for the visit.
Your PTSA has assisted with two new initiatives at school: RAM Perks and the Academic Achievement Awards. The Academic Achievement Awards are distributed during a school assembly quarterly, rewarding students for their grades and attendance. We would like to thank Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers for donating Free Kid’s Meals and Frozen Custard Oreos, and to I Heart Sushi for donating generous gift cards as well. We want to congratulate all of our students for their achievements.
Our Donation Drive brought in just over $6500, with an additional $1000 to be distributed from UT-Batelle’s gift matching program. These drives help us fund our Teacher Requests Program. These requests are mini-grants submitted by our teachers for academic enhancement activities, classroom supplies, field trips, and other activities that focus on supporting our students. We were able to fund almost $3500 during our Fall 2018 cycle. Awards were provided for the 5th and 6th grade ELA classes attendance at the upcoming Word Players Performance, SECME awards, UT field trip, 8th grade Science and Robotics academic enhancement devices and materials to meet new 8th grade science standards, Math Competitions registrations, Special Education reading program, and a donation to the 8th grade Social Studies Williamsburg trip.
Another activity that our students have been participating in is the National PTA 50th Anniversary of Reflections. This is an art program though which students can create artwork to reflect their interpretation of a theme through various forms of the arts (music, dance, visual). This year’s theme is “Heroes Around Me.” Deadline for submissions is December 21st, 2018. All submissions will be displayed at school. Winners will then compete at a statewide competition. If you are interested in more information about this event, please contact us at rmsorptsa@gmail.com.
Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to say to each of you – have a Wonderful Holiday Season and a Very Happy New Year! See you in 2019!!!
Warm Regards,
Stacey, Bridgette, Tara and Mary – Your PTSA Officers

Article by Rambler reporters M. Kitts and Abbey Tollefson
Robertsville Middle School has a lot of new teachers this year. One of these teachers is Justin Warner. Warner teaches 6th grade math. Before coming to RMS, Warner taught at Willow Brook Elementary School for nine years.
Not many people would go from teaching elementary school kids to teaching middle schoolers. However, according to Warner, “Elementary wasn’t really my fit. I prefer middle school ages. You all have a much better sense of humor, even though you can sometimes smell a little worse after gym class.”
His biggest change was the curriculum. “6th grade math is similar to 3rd grade math, but much more advanced of course.”
He had wanted to switch to middle school for a while and heard last year about an opening for a math teacher at Robertsville. “I like that middle school has sports and clubs. It gives everyone a sense of community here,” Warner said.
In case it seems Warner is all school and no fun, it must be noted that his favorite movies are the Star Wars movies. When asked why, he said, “I was born in the 80’s, so Star Wars was a huge part of my childhood. It’s my favorite because of the story and characters.” His passion even shows when you walk into his classroom.
He said he became a teacher to help “students who are struggling at school, or those who can’t find joy in school. That’s my goal: show students that school doesn’t have to be boring or miserable.”
Warner grew up in Indiana, but when he was five, he moved to Hillsboro, Ohio. He lives with his wife Shelly, and their children Kenzie, Landon, Brinley and Riley.
He is not the only new teacher at Robertsville. Warner is not even the only new 6th grade teacher. If you see any of the new teachers, make sure to say hi and welcome them to Robertsville.
GIVE Club at Robertsville
Robertsville has a new club started by students who want to make a difference by serving others. GIVE stands for Get Involved Value Everyone. The group meets each Friday morning beginning at 7:05 in Coach Scott’s room (224). Since August, members have collected sleepwear for a pajama drive, collected school supplies for a Navajo school, and food are currently being gathered for Thanksgiving baskets and other organizations in our community.
Last month, students met after school and helped to prepare food for Tabitha’s Table. GIVE Club members did an outstanding job serving the meal and cleaning up afterward. Plans are now underway to host a Christmas Party for elementary students at Willow Brook in December. Long-range plans include a clean water project and sewing little dresses for Africa. We would love to have new members, so please join us on Friday mornings!
Chess Club Competition
On November 3rd RMS once again took 2nd place in the Secret City Chess Championship. This tournament represents all of the East Tennessee Region. Also, special congratulations to Patrick Wurm. He received Top Player under 600 in his age bracket.
Congratulations to RMS Art Student
Each year, the Knoxville Museum of Art hosts its annual "East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibit."
This show is for middle and high school students. This year, our own 8th grader Rainee Mitchell (or as we like to call her, "Purple Rainee), has won "Best Middle School Piece" for her work entitled A Drawn Reality.
This is an EXTREMELY prestigious award and will also include a cash prize for the young lady. To give you an idea, there are about 10 awards given out in various categories, based upon medium. This award is second only to the "Best in Show" award, which is always given to high school students.I suppose that it was a good omen that her initials are 2/3's of "RMS." A pic is included here.
We haven't yet received a list of all the RMS submitted pieces that have been accepted into this juried show. We should know within a week. I'll let you know when we do. Indeed, it is an honor to even be accepted. There is a reception at the KMA on Tuesday, December 11th, from 6-8pm. The exhibit will be up until January 13th, 2019.
