March is here and it is time to start planning for next year! As crazy as it sounds, it is already time for students to start thinking about the classes they want to take next year so we can begin tentative planning and master schedule building for the 2020-21 school year. On March 9, we will have our College/Career/Curriculum Fair for students to learn about all the class options at Bay and how these classes connect to college entrance as well as future careers. This event continues to be a great success giving students a chance to learn about how the classes at Bay can connect to their future goals and/or interests.


Another continued focus for us is our seniors and our upcoming graduation on June 9th. Counselors are reviewing grades and credit information for each senior, consulting as needed, and sending home reminder letters regarding steps to complete in order to graduate in June. Senior year can be fun, but it can also be a confusing time for students and parents, so we are working hard to communicate with everyone to ensure our seniors are on-track to walk in June for graduation. Parents please remember: if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student, you are always encouraged to contact the appropriate counselor to review credits, testing expectations, or any other questions you might have.


March also marks the start of our spring sports season. Monday, March 2nd, all spring athletes begin practices. The spring season is my favorite time of year and our spring sports offer opportunities to watch our Bay athletes perform while enjoying the nice sunny weather (or rain- which one never knows what to expect living in the northwest).


As a staff, we are reviewing data (grades, attendance, discipline, etc.) to monitor student achievement and planning for upcoming testing. Smarter Balance starts in May, School-Wide SAT testing is on March 4th, and we are currently wrapping up ELPA testing that started in February.


I hope to see you at the upcoming Hudson’s Bay Foundation Fundraiser on March 13 (check website for more details), at an upcoming sporting event, or a Bay performance! GO EAGLES!

A three-year supplemental levy that will maintain current levels of programs and services in Vancouver Public Schools was recently approved by Vancouver voters with 60.51% yes votes. The levy will make up a multimillion budget shortage due to changes in state funding for education.

“I am extremely grateful to this community for providing more than 55 years of continuous financial support for our students and schools,” said Superintendent Steve Webb. “This election shows the value our voters hold for the education of our children and youth.”

Meningococcal and HPV

As a parent, there is nothing more important than safeguarding your child’s health. The Washington State Legislature requires us to make information available to you about meningococcal disease and human papillomavirus (HPV). Know the facts about these diseases and the vaccines available to protect your child.

Meningococcal Disease and Prevention

What is meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection. Fortunately, this life-threatening illness is rare, with only 20-30 cases reported each year in Washington. The most common symptoms of the disease include fever, cough, headache, and rash. It can cause meningitis (swelling of the covering of the brain and spinal cord). The disease spreads through close contact with an infected person. Teens and young adults are more likely to get meningococcal disease, especially if they live in group settings like college dorms.


How can I protect my child from meningococcal disease?

The meningococcal conjugate vaccine, or MCV4, prevents against four types of the disease. It is a 2-dose series recommended for all children between 11 and 12 years of age, and again at 16 to 18 years of age. The meningococcal B vaccine, or MenB, is recommended for some children with rare health conditions or who are at risk during a meningococcal B outbreak.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Prevention

What is HPV?

HPV is a common virus. Most people exposed to HPV will never develop health issues. But for others, HPV causes major health problems, including cervical, anal, vulvar, mouth, and throat cancer. Most infected people have no symptoms and may spread the virus without knowing it. HPV spreads mainly through sexual contact.

How can I protect my child from HPV?

Make sure your child gets the HPV vaccine. The vaccine is highly effective. The HPV vaccine can prevent infection from some of the most common and serious types of HPV that cause cancer and genital warts. The vaccine does not get rid of existing HPV infections.

Who should get the vaccine and when should they get it?

Because the immunization is more effective when given at younger ages, 9 through 14 year olds need 2 doses. Those starting at 15 or older need three doses. The recommended age is 11 or 12. HPV vaccine may be given up to age 26.

Where can I find the meningococcal and HPV vaccines?

Talk to your healthcare provider about the vaccines your child needs. In addition to meningococcal and HPV, your preteen should receive Tdap. Washington offers vaccines at no cost to kids through age 18. Providers may charge an office visit fee or administration fee to give the vaccine. If you can’t afford these fees, you can ask to have them waived.

Building administration will contact the parents/guardians on the next school business day regarding the matter.

Stormwater Education

Vancouver families depend on clean rivers, streams and lakes for swimming, fishing and preserving habitat for future generations. You can help reduce one of the biggest threats to our waterways, pollution left behind from everyday activities that gets picked up by stormwater.

We all contribute to stormwater pollution, so we all need to be part of the solution. Here are three easy tips you can follow to reduce water pollution and help protect our rivers, streams and lakes.

Only rain down the drain. As simple as it sounds, this is the most important principle for reducing water pollution, and it should be taken literally. Whatever goes down the storm drain almost always ends up in our streams. Even if you’re not putting anything directly into a storm drain, be aware of what runoff can pick up from your home and yard. This includes grass clippings, car washing soap, fertilizers and pet waste, just to name a few.

“Natural” can still be pollution. It’s easy to overlook pollutants that seem “natural,” such as grass clippings, pet waste and organic fertilizers. In our developed communities, these are significant sources of pollution. Fecal coliform is one of the top pollutants found in streams, and much of it comes from pet owners who don’t pick their pet’s waste. Nutrients in yard debris and fertilizers feed potentially toxic algae that deplete water of oxygen needed by aquatic life.

Sweep it up, don’t hose if off. Using a hose to wash away a spill or clean the driveway is a sure way to send pollutants to our streams. Instead, use a broom and dustpan to sweep up pollutants, close them in a bag and put it in the garbage. For liquid spills, put down an absorbent material, such as kitty litter, and sweep it into a bag before disposing in the trash.

School messages will now reach more families

VPS is always looking for ways to improve communication with all of our families including families with students who have multiple residences. In response to parent requests, these families now will receive auto calls and emails from their school. The following criteria must be in place:


  • The family must be listed as the “second” family on the school registration form.

  • The family must also be signed up for the district’s online Parent Access.


At this time, attendance messages will continue to go to the parent who has listed their phone number and email as the primary contact. Parents who do not wish to receive school messages can opt out from receiving emails and calls.


Instructions to opt out:

  • Opting out of auto calls: Call 855-502-7867 from the phone number that is receiving the phone calls you wish to stop.

  • Opting out of emails: Parents can click on the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the email to stop receiving emails.

Prevention and Intervention Specialist

Did you know that 1 in 5 Washington 10th graders reported using marijuana in the past 30 days? Marijuana can change the way a teen’s mind and body perform, affecting memory, learning, mood, motivation, coordination, and judgment. However, there are ways you can help prevent teens from using marijuana. Research shows adults are the number one influence in teens’ lives, especially when it comes to making healthy decisions like not to use marijuana. Teens watch and listen to the adults they know and respect. When influential adults are present and engaged, teens are happier, healthier, and make better choices.

School Credit for Students Who Are Working:

The Vancouver School District recognizes that work experience can be a valuable learning experience for a student. A student who is working at a real job and is at least 16 years of age, can get high school credit for their work hours. For every 180 hours of verified work experience, the student receives a .5 credit. This credit can replace any Elective or Occupational Ed. Credit that the student needs in order to graduate. The credit will also go on the student’s transcript and the grade will be an A – which will help increase the student’s overall G.P.A. score.


Students must be working at a real job and not paid under the table. They also must be at least 16 years of age in order to be enrolled in the Work Based Learning program.


Students may earn up to 2.0 credits of Work Based Learning for each school year. Every Work Based Learning credit earned is listed on the student’s transcript and is graded as an A. This will help the student’s overall G.P.A. score.

Student Welfare and Attendance

Vancouver School District’s goal is to ensure that students attend 90% or more of the school year. With that, we hope to reduce the rates of chronic absenteeism to a minimum. What is chronic absenteeism? Chronic absenteeism is defined as instances where a student is absent for more than 10% of instruction time in a school year or missing about 2 days per month.

USE OF CELL PHONES BY STUDENTS:

Possession of a cell phone by a student on school district property is a privilege which may be revoked if the student does not follow this district policy:

During classroom and instructional time, the cellular telephone must be “OFF & AWAY”. Text messaging is NOT allowed during classroom or instructional time. If a student uses his/her phone during instructional time and a staff member asks for it to be handed over to him/her, the student must relinquish the phone immediately or will be disciplined for failure to cooperate.



ANY STUDENT WHO POSSESSES A CELL PHONE ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS CARE. AT NO TIME IS THE DISTRICT RESPONSIBLE FOR PREVENTING THEFT, LOSS OR DAMAGE TO A CELL PHONE OR ANY ELECTRONIC DEVISE BROUGHT ONTO ITS PROPERTY OR TAKEN TO AN OFF CAMPUS SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENT.

WHAT IS HBF?

The Hudson’s Bay Foundation (HBF) is a 501.3c non-profit school-wide Booster Club for Hudson’s Bay High School that was formed in February of 2010. HBF’s Mission is to ‘benefit the students of HBHS’, through various fundraising efforts and a unique Grant process. HBF’s Board is composed of parent volunteers, alumni, and retired faculty, coaches and administrators, all serving with the goal of assisting the students at Hudson’s Bay.


Donations come from HB alumni as part of our “Soaring Eagles” competition, and can be earmarked for specific purposes if the donor so desires. A receipt with the HBF tax I.D. number will be provided. Businesses contribute by sponsoring components of our fundraisers and by purchasing advertising for athletics. Two major fundraisers are held each year to generate funds to donate to academic, activities and athletic programs in the high school through the HBF Grants process.

Alumni donations to date total over $90,000. Over the 8 years of this group’s existence, more than $120,000 has been given to a wide range of athletic, activity and academic programs, including assistance with payment of ASB and athletic fees which can prevent low income students from participating fully in all high school has to offer.
