KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHANAU
Thanks to all our whanau for the support of the Paetoki Build a Business venture - the products are still being made and delivered. We had a great awards evening last night followed by some wonderful Paetoki team social dancing! It was great to see so many of our whanau here supporting and dancing - what wonderful role models we have within our community!
Well done to our team of Cross Country runners who went to the New Plymouth Cross Country on Wednesday! It was a perfect day for running and we came away with some awesome results. Big thanks to all the parents who came along and supported and drove our team to the run.
Next week is the last of Term 3. You will be receiving your child(ren)'s Progress Report next Thursday. This is the same report we use all year to show progress against their NZ curriculum level and age. It also show the progress against our school values.
Lastly, can we please ask that any absences, important information or communications about your child(ren) is communicated through the office not on Seesaw. Seesaw is becoming a bit of a messaging service with teachers - which is not what the intention of this platform is. Seesaw is a way for teachers to share work from class and offer an insight in to a day in the classroom. If you have any important information that we need to know, please email the office; office@vogeltown.school.nz or ring on 0217536843 or use the Skool Loop app.
With the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, school will be closed on Monday 26th September to commemorate her life with the rest of New Zealand.
Nga mihi nui Vogeltown whanau,
Mr O and the VS team
WORLD CAR FREE DAY!
STRUCTURED LITERACY AT VOGELTOWN
You may have heard that Vogeltown School - currently in years 1 and 2 - have adopted a 'Better Start Literacy Approach' to our literacy.
This is a structured approach to literacy to support children’s early reading, writing and oral language success. Below is some information about how the BSLA fits within the formal structured literacy definition:
• Its development has been led by internationally leading researchers in phonological
awareness and children’s oral language and literacy development - Professor Gail Gillon and
Professor Brigid McNeill at the University of Canterbury (UC).
• It has been specifically designed for our New Zealand educational context and controlled
research trials have proven its effectiveness.
• The Approach is set within a strengths based and culturally responsive framework. Professor
Angus Macfarlane (UC Professor of Māori research) and Tufulasi Taleni (UC Leader in Pasifika
Education) have guided the development of the Approach.
• It includes the systematic teaching of critical phonological awareness skills and letter-sound
knowledge skills through fun, game-based activities, and activities that make explicit links to
the reading and spelling context.
• It includes structured small group reading sessions using the new Ministry of Education
Ready to Read – Phonics Plus early reading series, which follows a phonic scope and
sequence.
• In addition to phonics and phonological awareness, the approach includes explicit teaching
in vocabulary skills and in building children’s oral narrative and listening comprehension
skills through quality children’s story books.
• The Better Start Literacy Approach follows the same structured phonics scope and sequence
that is used in Ready to Read – Phonics Plus reading series, so that small group and large
group teaching activities are aligned
• The Better Start Literacy Approach is designed to support ALL children and is based on
Universal Design for Learning principles. There are adapted assessment and teaching tasks
to ensure children who have complex communication needs can access early literacy
assessment and teaching.
The Better start Literacy Approach at Vogeltown is showing amazing progress with our learners! We are so stoked to see the increase in reading achievements for our tamariki. We are going to develop this approach across the whole school as resources become available form the Ministry of Education.

ERO (Education Review Office) at Vogeltown School
ERO maintains a regular review programme to evaluate and report on the education and care of young people in schools. Our school worked alongside ERO to write our Profile Report. This type of report will only happen once as part of our initial engagement with Te Ara Huarau. The profile report reflects our strategic goals and a shared evaluation focus in one or more areas that are important to us as we work together to improve outcomes for all our learners. ERO, like us, have a strong focus on equity and excellence.
Future reporting will show our progress and achievement towards meeting the goals we have set.
We are enjoying the work alongside Cath Leger from ERO - we really feel like we are doing an amazing job at Vogeltown and the staff, kids and community should feel proud of our recent report comments!
Some of the highlights we have seen from our recent Te Ara Huarau report are;
Vogeltown School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:
-
students have effective, sufficient, and equitable opportunities to learn (Ako)
-
students receive effective, culturally responsive quality teaching programmes (Kounga ako)
-
students and staff learn in a collaborative, caring, inclusive family environment (Te kura o ngakaupai)
-
the community is engaged with the school and feels welcome (Whanaungatanga)
-
the leadership team ensures a supportive, cohesive, coherent environment conducive for student learning and teaching (Mana Tangata)
-
the BOT scrutinises the work of the school in achieving valued student outcomes and wellbeing (Kaitiakitanga)
- existing systems, processes and leaders that identify and respond to a range of learner needs
- a clear school identity that is being further nourished through mātauranga māori
- a family like atmosphere that celebrates inclusivity, embraces diversity, and supports wellbeing.

VOGELTOWN HOME AND SCHOOL
Next week is the last week for the main fundraiser of Term 3 - teatowels!! The tea towels will be done in whanau groups (each sibling on the same tea towel) and will represent their whanau through the colour of the teatowel.
This is instead of the annual calendar art work we do. We need all orders in by the end of this term as this gives the organisation enough time to make them and have them back to us to send out for Xmas pressies!
The kids are doing a self portrait (face or whole body) on to the towel with their name underneath. See the poster below for the link to Kindo for all orders.
SCHOOL DISCO!
A reminder next Tuesday is our School Disco! We have not had a disco for 3 years, so we are ready to have one!
Juniors 5:30pm - 6:15pm
Middles and Seniors 6:30pm - 7:30pm
The theme for the night is 'BEING ORIGINAL' (as per our school value).
There is a gold coin entry (or non-perishable item) donation at the door.
A big thanks to one of our Dads - Ash Haimona for being the DJ on the night!
VOGELTOWN SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Kia ora Vogeltown whanau,
Your new School Board of Trustees made up of parent representatives, Principal and teacher representative has convened for the first time, allocated responsibilities and started the processes of setting out objectives for the next three year term.
Welcome back Peta Apperley and Steve Venables, together with Rachel Pretty representing staff. It is my pleasure to welcome Paul Gibbins and Hemi Coates for their first term in support of the School.
I wish to acknowledge all those who put themselves forward for consideration at the recent election. It is a credit to the school community that so many were prepared to do so. Our community engagement continues to strengthen as evidenced by the much improved ballot numbers.
We again enjoy an enviable mix of complementary skills and experience. Parents and caregivers can take confidence in Vogeltown School’s governance and the relationship between Board and management.
As our school role continues to trend upward, we are well positioned to support the educational and pastoral needs of our tamariki. There is, however, always an opportunity for the community to assist in elevating our children’s experience further and the Board encourages further engagement. This is particularly relevant in the post-pandemic era! Be it home and school, sports, fundraisers or parent interviews, please make the time to contribute your time and energy to help us all make the School an even better environment for our children!
Ngā mihi nui,
Mike Miners - Vogeltown School, Presiding Member

PAETOKI TEAM - 'BUILD A BUSINESS' EVENING
YEAR 5 AND 6 CAMP, 2023
Every 2 years, we hold a camp for all our Year 5 and 6 students. Our 2023 camp will be held from Wednesday 22 February to Friday 24 February at Vertical Horizon in Inglewood.
The cost of camp will be confirmed soon, but is likely to be around $150.00 per child. We are part of the Ministry of Education's donation scheme, but would still appreciate donations towards the cost of camp. We will set up a payment scheme on Kindo so that families are able to spread the cost out over the coming months. Cash and EFTPOS payments will also be welcomed.
Our camp cannot function without parent support. If you would like to attend camp as a parent helper, you will need to complete a Police Vetting Form. These can be collected from the Senior Office. We also need to sight one form of photographic ID.
More information about camp will continue to become available over the coming months.
Regards
The Paetoki Team
ENROLMENTS FOR 2023
Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available
from the school office.
Next year there will be two enrolment periods.
The first enrolment period runs from 1 February 2023 to 6 April 2023.
The second enrolment period runs from 24 April 2023 to 30 June 2023.
The Board has determined that 0 places are likely to be available for out of zone students
turning 5 in the first enrolment period. The Board will determine how many places are likely
to be available for out of zone students turning 5 for the second enrolment period by
16 December 2022. The exact number of places will depend on the number of enrolments
received from students who live within the school’s home zone.
For students seeking enrolment within the second enrolment period, the deadline for receipt
of out of zone places is Friday 3 February 2023. Application for enrolment for an out of
zone student is made by completing an out of zone application form (available from the
school office and off our school website). Applications can be sent via email to
office@vogeltown.school.nz or delivered directly to the school office.
Parents and whanau who live in the home zone and intend enrolling their child for 2023
should apply by 30th September 2022 to assist the school to plan effectively for the 2023
school year.
For the second enrolment period, if the number of out of zone applications exceeds the
number of places available, students will be selected by ballot in accordance with
instructions detailed in the enrolment scheme. If a ballot is required, it will be held on
Tuesday 7 February 2023.
Parents and whanau will be informed of the outcome of the ballot on Friday 10 February
2023.
