Why SEM?
Here's Where the SEM Comes In...
Creativity Is Not Random!
What is Creativity?
Schoolwide Enrichment Model
Enrichment Clusters
According to Renzulli and Reis, "Enrichment clusters are non-graded groups of students who share common interests and come together during specially designed time blocks to pursue those interests."
In an enrichment cluster, students and teachers will select the area in which they want to participate. The goal is to produce products and/or services that are intended to have an impact on a particular audience (Type III).
Survey the Students and Teachers
Type I
- are group enrichment activities
- introduce students to "big ideas"
- provide the "spark" to ignite a student's interest in a certain subject
- provide opportunities for Type II and Type III activities
- exposes young people to subjects and ideas not usually offered in the regular classroom
Examples: contacting speakers, arranging demonstrations, trips (virtual or in person), and/or performances, using varied materials such as films, slides, videos, print and non-print media
Type II
- are process and methodological skills
- are "how-to" lessons on specific skills relating to certain topics such as library and reference skills, writing skills, oral presentation skills, creative thinking, and problem solving, technology skills
Examples: use a microscope, develop a film or animated movie, use a computer drafting program, create a brochure or newsletter
Type III
- are individualized, real-world and in-depth projects for small groups or independent students who have specific interests, talents, or gifts
- involve students in thinking, feeling and doing like a practicing professional
- are dynamic and unplanned by the teacher
- produce useful products and are produced for an authentic audience
- are real-life solution(s) to a problem and may bring about change
Examples: write and present a talk show and broadcast to another school, design a law and present it to local reps, develop a travel brochure and display at a travel agency, grow a garden and use the produce to feed the homeless

What SEM IS and IS NOT!
student driven, enrichment based, academically relevant, guided by student interests, real world problem solving, focused on talent development, school wide and engaging
SEM is not:
fluff, just for fun, a replacement of the regular curriculum, for gifted learners only, remediation, a reward for good behavior, an extra recess, and a once a week event
