Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 14- 16 May 2018
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
We wish all Confirmation candidates from the school and the parish all the best as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend. May they be blessed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and be strengthened in their Catholic faith so that they continue to live life with love, joy and service to others.
CAR PARK PROJECT
It is really pleasing to note that the commencement of works on our car park project have certainly added a new buzz and hive of activity around the school. This week we have seen the delivery of some heavy plant and equipment for the carpark preparation, with the removal of bulk sand works currently taking place. Traffic management will be in place where necessary and the contractors will endeavor to keep work traffic to a minimum during peak times.
MOTHER’S DAY LITURGY AND MORNING TEA
A huge thank you to 4G for organizing the lovely Mother’s Day Assembly last Friday morning, to all students for their spirited singing, the staff for organising morning tea and to our mothers, grandmothers and families for coming along to celebrate. This was a lovely little prelude to the showering of mums with love and gifts on Mother’s Day.
PRINCIPAL LONG SERVICE LEAVE
As mentioned in previous correspondence, I will be taking some Long Service Leave to travel overseas from 11 June – 27 July. We wish Mr Andrew De Maio well as he undertakes the principal responsibilities during this time.
“I can do things that you cannot. You can do things that I cannot.
Together we can do GREAT things!”
-Mother Teresa-
Thank you for your continued support.
Many blessings

Principal

Welcome to the WCPS Idea Factory
The WCPS Idea Factory is a new, collaborative workspace which provides students with opportunities for hands-on and creative ways to design, experiment, build and invent.
While exploring their own interests, students will hone vital 21st century skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), take an active role in their own learning, improve critical thinking skills and boost self-confidence.
The Idea Factory is currently running the following courses:
LEGO CLUB (Years 1 & 2)
Thursday Lunchtimes from Week 4 - Get lost in the wonderful world of Lego. Students will learn teamwork, creativity, problem solving, communication and planning skills.
SEWING CLUB (Years 4 & 5)
Tuesday Lunchtimes - Students will design and create their own hand-sewn felt toy and learn a valuable life skill.
COOKING CLUB (Years 3-6)
Wednesday Lunchtimes from Week 5 - The most scrumptious class in school! Students will learn kitchen hygiene, safe use of equipment and how to make delicious, healthy snacks.
REPAIR CAFÉ (Years 1-6)
Friday Lunchtimes (No bookings required) - Students are invited to bring any broken items from home (clothing, electronics, toys etc) and using the equipment provided (and some guidance from teachers), try to fix it!
Students have been given the information to sign up for these clubs which will run for a few weeks before giving the next set of children the opportunity to take part.
Places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. If your child did not get a place in this round, the next round will start in a few weeks time.
The sign-ups cannot be done by parents as the school is trying to encourage student independence and let students take a pro-active role in their own learning. If you have any queries or concerns, please email the organiser at Michael.Barns@cewa.edu.au
We look forward to showing the WCPS community some of the amazing work our students create!

Kids of Mercy
One of the sad experiences for me as the coordinator of the Kids of Mercy is that inevitably I have to say goodbye to the ladies I have come to know over the 8 years I have been running the program.
In week one we learned that Pat had passed away and when Taleah saw Pat's photo on display she said,
"That's sad Mrs Lynch. Pat was so good at chatting. She was a good one."
Last week, when we arrived, the ladies were preparing for their memorial liturgy for Pat and how beautiful it was to see a photo of her "chatting" with one of our students. We are part of their journey and they are part of ours.
