From the Middle EMS and ELA
News from the Principal, August 14, 2019
Hello Parents and Families,
Welcome back! We have enjoyed kicking off the school year with all our EMS and ELA students. On Tuesday, our 7th graders at EMS participated in orientation including lots of fun activities and ELA students kicked off their year all together. On Wednesday, we started our day all together in an assembly to have a little fun and talk about procedures and policies.
One important policy we discussed today is cell phones. While cell phones are allowed in the middle school building, cell phones should be off (or at least silent) and away during class and passing period. Cell phones are allowed at lunch time and before and after school. If ever you have an emergency and need to reach your student immediately, please feel free to call our main line at 303-806-2110 or 303-806-2100.
We are looking forward to a great year!
~Annessa Hart, Principal
First days of school...
In our classrooms and assemblies yesterday and today, we talked about some of the important policies and procedures to help students find success at EMS and ELA.
All students have been provided a planner which is a great organizational tool for keeping track of homework and other important class information. The planner also has the school student handbook. Please review this with your students at your earliest convenience.
Also, mark your calendar for two important upcoming events.
- Honor Roll Breakfast August 16, 2019 7:30 am (for last year's quarter 4 honor roll recipients and families)

Student IDs...a new solution
The photo company (Life Touch) is still coming on the 19th, but we wanted to ensure that we listened to your concerns about safety, and we have provided a temporary ID for each student. These IDs do not have photos on them, but have all the other information (name, student number/bar code, etc.) so that students have an ID card to use at lunch, for boarding the bus, and to wear in the building at all times. Students received these IDs today, and will need to wear them on their lanyards at all times while in the building and to board the school bus (this rule of visible IDs is true for all students at TEC).
On August 19th, students will take their picture and receive their official ID--at this time they will need to turn in their temporary ID.
Tie Dye T-shirts--Instructions for Washing
All EMS students will tie dye shirts for their team spirit days. 7th graders tie dyed today and 8th graders will tie dye next week. To wash the shirts, follow the directions below:
Tie Dye Care Instructions
Wait 12 hours before washing shirts to allow dye to set.
Take the fabric out of the bag & remove all the rubber bands (wearing gloves or plastic bags over hands to avoid blue fingers for a couple days).
Rinse the shirt with water until the water runs clear (will take a few minutes).
Wash the shirt separately by itself without other clothes the first time.
Dry in dryer or hang dry in the sun to heat set the dye into the fabric.
**If you take it to a laundromat, they will want you to rinse and dry the shirt first. Then take it to the laundromat and wash it by itself, or bring it to the art teacher and she can wash it too.

The focus isn’t just on discipline and responding to behavior concerns. The focus must also be on building connections as a way to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. From every day tools for the classroom to school and district-wide implementation strategies, learn about how to achieve dramatic results with Restorative Practices.
