News from Glen Crest Middle School: November 6, 2022
From the Principal
As a school, we are seeing an increase in cases of Influenza A, Strep, RSV, Covid and GI upset. There has been a steady stream of students sent home from the health office this past week and higher than typical absence rates.
As a reminder, your child must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications to return to school. If they have had vomiting or diarrhea, it also needs to be 24 hours since the last episode to return to school.
If your child has a cough and it cannot be controlled by a cough medicine, we recommend you keep your child home so as not to disrupt the class.
Please email all test results, including home covid tests to the school nurse. We do track other illnesses besides Covid.
Please remind your students to wash hands frequently, use hand sanitizer and cover their coughs. Thank you!
Our Annual Spartacus Reading Challenge is underway. Students and staff read from a list of 25 excellent books, all published in 2022, and considered to be in the running for the prestigious Newbery Medal for Children's Literature. Each time a student completes a book, if they complete a Spartacus Kahoot! form and turn it into the library they will be entered into a weekly drawing for prizes. Visit the library website for more details.

6th grade parents - Erin's Law
During the week of November 7-11, our 6th grade health class will be learning about Erin’s Law. Illinois school districts are required to provide age-appropriate Erin’s Law lessons to all students from preschool to eighth grade. The goal of this presentation is to help children feel empowered to report problems.
The Erin’s Law presentations will focus on keeping our bodies safe and how others should respect your personal space. Students will practice saying ‘no’ to anyone who is not respecting their body, and how to report the incident. Students will be asked to think of trusted adults in their life they could talk to if they felt someone was making inappropriate comments or physical touching.
If you have any questions about the content of the lessons, please don’t hesitate to contact the health teacher, Courtney Russell. Parents must submit a "written objection" if they wish for their child to not participate in this particular segment of the course. Parents do not need to give a reason. (Some letters reference "religious reasons").
Veteran's Day Assembly
Even if your Veteran is not able to attend, we want to honor them as a part of our slideshow presentation at the assembly. Please help your student find a picture of your Veteran to share. All Veterans and active duty persons are invited to participate.
The Veterans Day assembly invitation RSVP, slideshow template and opportunity to participate information was shared with all students through their Social Studies teachers. The RSVPs, pictures and introductions are due back by Monday 11/7/2022 if your student wants to contribute.

No online learning on ‘snow days’ this school year
When school buildings need to close due to extreme weather (such as heavy snow), CCSD 89 will not be providing online learning this school year. If a snow day is necessary, schools will be closed and the day will be added to the end of the school year. This change is a result of feedback from parent groups.
At this time, the last day of school is scheduled to be a half-day on Thursday, May 25. The district builds five emergency days into the school calendar. If all five emergency days are used, the last day of this school year would be Friday, June 2.
If a snow day is called, information will be released through a phone message, as well as the district’s website (www.ccsd89.org), Facebook page (facebook.com/CCSD89), and Twitter account (@CCSD89). The district’s messaging system uses contact info supplied by guardians.
Even when school is open, students should dress for the cold. Students will continue to go outside for recess as long as the weather remains above 10 degrees.

Reminder: Phones, smartwatches should be off and out of sight at school
Students have been receiving or sending messages from family members and friends during the school day. These messages disrupt the learning environment for your child, their classmates, and the teacher. If you need to reach your child during the day, please contact the main office.
Cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices must be kept out of sight in a backpack, purse, or locker during the school day. If a student violates these rules, the device will be confiscated and there may be disciplinary action.
Please have a conversation at home about the appropriate use of technology at school and why it is important that all students are able to focus on their learning.
More information is available on page 44 of the Student/Parent Handbook, CCSD 89 Board of Education Policy 7:192 – Student Use of Mobile Telecommunication Devices, and Board Regulation 7:192-R.

Families may be charged for damage to district technology devices
Families should have a conversation at home about the importance of appropriately using the district's technology devices (as outlined in the district’s Acceptable Use Policy.) Appropriate use includes: carrying the device carefully, keeping liquids away from devices, and not leaving devices in areas with extreme heat or cold. When a district device (such as an iPad or Chromebook) is damaged or lost due to negligence or misuse, the repair or replacement will be the family’s responsibility. A list of charges is available at: https://www.ccsd89.org/techdamage
FirstView app helps families keep up with bus travel
Many CCSD 89 families will now be able to track their student’s bus trips to and from school through a free busing app. Parents can download the FirstView app. The app can show an estimated number of minutes until the bus arrives at stops, and when buses arrive at school.
