Teacher Tribute
Ms. Chanderika Subherwal, has been selected by Blake Jones to receive a Stanford University Teacher Tribute. This past summer, students from the incoming Class of 2021 were given an opportunity to formally acknowledge an educator who played a significant role in their intellectual, academic, and personal development. This project is a central part of Stanford's Teacher Tribute Initiative, which allows students to express their appreciation and honor those who have made a difference in their lives. Congrats Ms. Subherwal!
An Introduction to Cultural Traditions with Quizlet Live
In Ms. Kendra Fisher’s Spanish 4 Honors class, students were learning about cultural traditions, and how those traditions and values help define communities across the world. Students were asked about the traditions that they were already a part of, or participate in within the social groups they belong to. Kendra started an open conversation with her students to identify traditions at Foothill High School, holiday traditions they celebrate with their families, and regular events they experience because of their native culture.
She focused the students on an image that showcased offerings for El Dia De Los Muertos. Her students signed into the Quizlet activity she created, and they navigated through the image to familiarize themselves with vocabulary terms that identified items on the table. They were then grouped automatically in a challenge activity where student groups went head to head to identify those items in random order. Students were then asked to write a reflection on the major points for the day’s lesson, and think about how that ties into how these traditions contribute to the well-being of communities.
This was a really engaging way to have students explore vocabulary terms. They were involved in conversation about values and traditions, shared common experiences, and learned content relevant to their next unit of study.
UC Riverside Visit Inspires and Motivates AVID Students
With record enrollment in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program, Foothill students had to make two separate trips to check out UC Riverside. Freshmen and Sophomore AVID students visited on October 9 and reported that the tours were phenomenal and the admission information sessions were enlightening. On October 23, AVID Juniors and Seniors visited the Highlanders campus and were also treated to campus tours, residence hall tours, and admission information sessions, with the added treat of a special visit with Foothill AVID Alumnus & Division I UCR soccer star Jonick Pineda, who inspired us with his story of determination and success.
