Teacher of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Humanitarian of the Year!
From Specials Team
From Ms. Sanguinetti- Fine Arts Night- Stage Closed
These next few weeks leading up to spring break are going to be CRAZY with events and performances. We have Fine Arts Night next Thursday (everyone should come out!), the Kindergarten Program on March 5th, and the talent show on March 6th. The stage will be closed until Friday (3/6) to accommodate all rehearsals. This should not interfere with students lunch time, but we do ask that you remind students to be on the expected voice level during their lunch time. If a team if practicing on the stage during class lunches, we do not expect them to be completely silent. If they are maintaining the appropriate voice level, we should not have any problems. If they do exceed that level and begin yelling and screaming, we will have to remind them of the expectations, possibly asking for a zero voice level.
Thank you for your understanding and support of your specials and fine arts departments.
From Ms. Reyes- Book Fair and Dr. Seuss Week!
Did you know that Read Across America has changed? It used to be one week of celebrating reading with a focus on Dr. Seuss books and his birthday. NEA is now doing a year-round celebration of diverse books to help motivate kids to read.
At Highland Park, we have always enjoyed celebrating all types of reading! “Dr. Seuss week”, which coincidently falls on our Book Fair week of March 2nd -6th, is so much fun! Attached, please find a flyer to share with parents on Class Dojo or through email.
Flyers will be in your teacher box on Monday.
We hope you and your class can join us for some (or all) of the activities.
Pajama Story Palooza!
Do you love books and book fairs? Do you want to share your love of reading with your students? Perhaps you are a fan of pajamas? Even if you answered no to all of these questions…keep reading this message is for you!
If you are new to HPES, the Pajama event is where we invite students and their families to return to school in the evening to hear amazing stories read aloud by HPES staff.

From Mr. Olivas- LPAC Information
Bulldog team – it is time to formalize and finalize state assessment decisions for accommodations before STAAR Test for your ELs.
We have scheduled the LPAC decision meeting for March 6TH during your planning period. I am expecting this meeting to be completed in no more than 15 minutes per bilingual teacher and 15 minutes for all ESL teacher. Mariela will be sending you the detailed schedule so you can know at what time you will need to attend the meeting.
The only way we can accomplish this is by having the decision forms ready before the meeting. I will be available after school the week of the meeting to help you out with any questions that you might have, That way we can do things in advance and save time.
Attached you have the decision forms – 2019-2020 K-5 STAAR Decision Form – complete this electronically or in paper for each student and send them to Mariela by Thursday the 5th.
· Complete one form for each of your LEP students, attached is the roster with your students. For the two-way DL teachers complete one for each or your students including non-LEP, monitored students. (for non-LEP and Monitored students only select language, they do not qualify for any supports)
· First select language of testing on PART I of the form- based this on data – (write down justification detailing MOY scores from MOCK or Reading levels for English and spanish)
· Then Select designated supports for language needs. (accommodation that students have received routinely in the classroom and will help their needs) – if students already receives any of the accommodation because they participate in 504 or SPED program, do not select it again. But write a note on PART III saying “students already receives accommodation through 504/SPED”
· On PART III of the form write down any other supports that you think your students need. (we will discuss eligibility before on during the meeting)
Please complete these task by Thursday March 5th. We want to honor you time and maximize it so please, please do this ahead of time. By this time you probably know what your students need, therefore it is just the documentation required. If you are unsure about the task or accommodation please come and talk to me or Mrs. Landers.
Thank you team.
Oratorical Event
Our annual Oratorical Event is around the corner and it's time to see our kids shine! Throughout the month of February, we will be celebrating Black History Month and recognizing African American figures who have made an impact in our lives. Our students will explore various poems, excerpts, and/or speeches by these figures and choose a selection that "speaks" to them which they will then memorize and recite in early March.
*Please note that this is mandatory for 3rd-5th graders at HP. Participating in the Oratorical Competition, on the other hand, is highly encouraged, but not a requirement.
You should have already/will soon receive "Oratorical Dates to Remember" along with an Oratorical rubric that you will use for each student.
Big thing to know now is... PLEASE talk to your kids about the event and have them select their Oratorical piece by Thursday, Feb. 6th . We will have a flyer going home that day providing parents with info about Oratorical (flyer attached in case you want to view).
Side note and reminder: All students in DL classes are eligible to compete in BOTH languages. They do not have to choose one or the other. If you have a student who is a TOP English and TOP Spanish performer, they can perform both poems for the competition.
Please contact Ms. Duong at any time if you need clarification or any further information. S Also, your grade level S.S. representative(s) are great resources as well!

Teaching Tip
Don’t let too much time go by without checking-in and providing your students' feedback. Students need to feel good about their achievements regularly in order to build the stamina it takes to master a difficult task.
Behavior Tip
Students feed off their teacher’s energy. Therefore, if you are positive and excited students will be too!
