Class of 2019
The Annual Scholarship Banquet
The annual Scholarship Banquet (previously known as the Scholarship Ceremony) will take place on Tuesday, May 14. Lunch and cake will be provided to our honorees, scholarship donors, and participating staff. Each student who received a scholarship will be recognized and presented with an honor cord to wear over their gown at graduation (attendance at the Scholarship Banquet is required to receive an honor cord).
The PTSA College Mentoring Committee who is sponsoring the event has two requests for parents:
1-To be invited, students need to self-report the scholarship(s) they received. Please encourage your senior to go to this google form that Ms. Hunter, Oakland Tech’s College Readiness Specialist, created for the students to complete:
http://tinyurl.com/otsc2019 which must be completed by May 3.
2-While the ceremony is for students to attend, we could use a handful of parent volunteers to help with set-up, food service, and clean-up. Please contact Elizabeth Falkner, falknerkenny@mac.com, if you are able to assist between 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

“I Can Afford College”
The “I Can Afford College” campaign is a statewide, financial aid awareness initiative sponsored by the California Community Colleges. The campaign got its start back in 2004, shortly after the California community colleges increased their enrollment fees. The governor and the state legislature wanted to make sure Californians knew how to make college affordable, so they set aside money to create an awareness campaign about financial aid.
The “I Can Afford College” campaign is funded by the State of California, through Proposition 98. This website is one of the main elements of the campaign. Since the site was launched, it has received more than 2.5 million visits. Additionally, the number of community college students who receive some type of financial aid has gone up by nearly 70 percent since 2004.
Our goal at “I Can Afford College” is simple. We want to let students and parents know that:
- California community colleges are affordable.
- Financial aid is available year-round to help pay for enrollment fees and college costs like books, supplies, and even rent in some cases.
- All 115 California community colleges have financial aid experts who can give you free one-on-one help.

In California, eligible 16 and 17 year olds can now pre-register online to vote and then automatically become active voters once they turn 18 — strengthening our democracy by helping to choose the people who will lead us and by voicing their opinions on issues that affect the future of our communities, state and union. We strongly encourage our eligible Bulldog students and families to register now and to exercise their right to be heard.
