In pirate movies, many people hear the word "scurvy'. Scurvy is a disease caused by lack of vitamin C and the disease would make their gums rot. If it got really bad, they could eventually die. There was another disease caused by mosquitos. When the mosquitos bit people, it gave them an itchy bump, but when explorers were around, the bug bite gave them a nasty virus from one bite. The virus would kill people from high fevers.
