Tools to Help You Help Your Student!
Parents and guardians are invited to our GMS Parent Night on January 24 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Pizza will be provided to the first 100 people from 5:30 to 6:00 pm in our auditorium. Childcare will also be provided. The goal of Parent Night is to provide additional tools to empower parents to help their middle school children. There is a session for everyone!
Sessions will be 30 minutes long so you can attend two sessions during the night. Topics include "Schoology Help" to get everything you need from grades to assignments; "Cybersafety," with tips on how to keep your child safe online, "Preparing for High School," and "It's All About Reading." We hope you take advantage of this parent night session brought to you by the teachers of GMS and your PTO!

30-minute Sessions:
CyberSafety
This session will provide information to parents on strategies to use with your child online. Do you know who your kid’s friends are online? Join us as we learn ways to help our children in the new online world. Facilitator: Alexander Dukes, Pickens County Behavioral Health.
Schoology Help
This session will help parents sign up on Schoology and learn how to check grades and assignments. We will have the student codes so parents will be able to sign up. The goal is to download the app on their device, sign up to view their students' information, and learn how to check grades. Facilitators: Robin Pope, Jennifer Marchbanks, and Melanie Callahan.
It's All About Reading!
This session will provide helpful parenting information on all things literacy. Do you know your child's reading level? South Carolina has new SC Ready state tests in English and Math. Do you know where your child is scoring and how to help them focus on improvement areas like non-fictional text, citing evidence or being able to analyze text? This session will empower parents in the very important area of reading and how it can impact all classes. Facilitator: John Campbell, Instructional Coach Gettys Middle School.
Preparing for High School
Do you want information on high school courses, virtual courses, GPA, class rank, SAT, and scholarships such as Palmetto, Life and Hope Scholarships? If so, this session is for you. In 7th grade students at Gettys start taking high school courses and decisions now start impacting their high school future. Learn some of the high school basics now. This session will be beneficial to parents of 7th and 8th grade students. Facilitator: Holly Harden, Head Guidance Department Counselor.
