What will my day be like at school?

The CHES Reopening Plan for the 2020-2021 School Year

CHSD Reopening Health and Safety Plan

Please read the CHSD Reopening Health and Safety Plan by clicking on the link below. The Plan describes the safety measures for the entire district. The remaining information on this newsletter is specific information about the Cambria Heights Elementary School for students in grades K-5.

**This is the plan as of today, July, 23, 2020: WE ARE OPENING OUR SCHOOLS FIVE DAYS A WEEK. As circumstances change and new mandates are ordered by the state and/or federal government, this Reopening Plan may change. You will be notified as soon as changes are made.

On the Bus

Green Phase - Students will sit two per seat and wear masks/face shields. PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE YOUR CHILD'S TEMPERATURE BEFORE SCHOOL, AND KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME IF THEY HAVE A TEMPERATURE OF 100.4 DEGREES OF HIGHER.

Yellow Phase - Students will sit one per seat and wear masks/face shields. Only half the amount of students will be riding the bus every other day. Parents are encouraged to take your child's temperature at home, but students will also have their temperatures taken before being admitted to the school. Students with a temperature of 100.4 will be escorted to the nurse's office.

Green & Yellow Phase -

Family members are encouraged to sit together on the buses.

Buses will drop off and pick up students using 4 different exits around the elementary school.

Parent drop off and pick up will remain at the front of the building on Campbell Street.

NO BUS PASSES WILL BE ISSUED! All students MUST ride the bus/van assigned to them or be picked up at the school by an adult listed on their approved contact sheet. Exceptions will be made for families with custody orders and during Early Dismissals.

In the Main Office

Visitors will be limited. If a parent needs to enter the building for a parent meeting, he or she will need to wear a mask/face shield and have his or her temperature taken before being granted access to the main office.

Any parent who needs to pick up their child will sign in using the School Gate Guardian System using their government issued ID. Parents will remain in the foyer, and your child will be brought to you in the foyer. Only 2 people are permitted in the foyer at a time to allow for social distancing.

Students will not be allowed in the main office unless they are being picked up. Handwritten notes for early pick ups, doctors' excuses, PTO forms, etc. will be placed in a homeroom envelope to be picked up by a staff member to bring to the office. Any materials that parents bring in for their children will be transferred to the office staff through the foyer and placed in the office lobby for students to pick up.

**NO BUS PASSES WILL BE ISSUED with the exception of families with custody orders. **

Breakfast Time

Green & Yellow - Students can pick up breakfast from the Grab & Go Carts (from 7:30-8:00) and eat in their homeroom. One cart will be located outside of the Music and Art Room on the second floor, and a second cart will be located outside of the library on the first floor. Students in grades K-2 will use the first floor cart. Students in grades 3-5 will use the second floor cart.

In the Hallway

Green & Yellow Phase - Hallways traffic will be in single file lines and one way. When the entire grade level is switching classes, students must turn right when leaving the classroom and follow the right side of their hallway space until they arrive at their next classroom. Masks/face shields must be worn when moving through the hallways.

Locker Use: Student should report straight to homeroom with all of their belongings. Students will store their packed lunch in the classroom. The teachers will stagger students to visit their lockers. Locker assignments will be spread out as much as possible.

Classroom

Green & Yellow Phases - Desks will be positioned 3-6 feet apart. Students must wear masks/face shields if 6 feet of social distancing is NOT possible. If students are able to maintain a distance of 6 feet while seated, masks/face shields are not required.

Students are encouraged to bring their own school supplies to limit sharing supplies. A list with suggested supplies will be shared with you soon.

Students will be issued their own electronic device to use for the entire year. Students in grades K-2 will be issued an iPad, and students in grades 3-5 will be issued a Chromebook. Devices will NOT be shared. Devices will be used in the classroom as well as at home if the situation calls for it. Protective carrying cases will be provided.

All classrooms are provided with a hot water sink and hand soap and/or hand sanitizer, and wipes. Students will be required to wash their hands often and wipe down surfaces before and after use.

Green Phase - All students return. Students will still switch classes. Grades 4 & 5 will switch for all subjects with their academic class group. Grades 1-3 will switch classes for Reading and Math.

Yellow Phase - All students will be split into two groups. Group A would have in-person learning on Monday and Wednesday. Group B would have in-person learning on Tuesday and Thursday. Remote learning would be conducted on the days students do not have in-person learning using a district-issued device. Fridays will be used for make-up, extra help, office hours, progress monitoring, and parent meetings.

Locations in each CHSD building will be made available on Fridays for students to visit in-person for teacher and para-educator assistance with online assignments. Families must provide transportation for this opportunity.

Lunch Time

Green & Yellow Phases - Students will pick up their lunch from the cafeteria and eat lunch in their classrooms. Students will use a hands-free ID card scanning system to buy their lunch. This ID card will be kept on a lanyard in their homerooms. This lanyard and card should NOT be taken home. Lunch will be served on throw away trays and condiments will be prepackaged.

The opportunity to eat outside is available as the weather permits and according to the teacher's plans.

Recess Time

Green & Yellow Phases -

Recess will be held outside every day as much as possible, limiting the number of students in each assigned area. The recess area will be split into 3 sections and used in a rotating manner: blacktop, soccer field, and playground equipment. Masks will not be worn during outdoor recess. Masks will be worn during indoor classroom recess.

On rainy days or days below 32 degrees, students will have alternative activities held within the building.

If it is not raining and above 32 degrees, students will go outside.

If it is snowing and above 32 degrees, students will still go outside and be required to wear snow pants, boots, hats, gloves, and winter coats to play. Please plan accordingly.

Students will be allowed to store an extra set of snow pants at school if families would want to do so. Boots can be worn to school and students can change into their shoes for the day.

In the Bathroom

Green & Yellow Phases - Classes will stagger the use of the bathrooms. Sink dividers have been installed to separate students as they wash their hands.

Fountains/Water

Green & Yellow - Students should bring their own water bottles, which may be refilled at the new water filling stations installed throughout the building (see photo above). Students will NOT be able to drink from the fountains directly.

Specials

Green - Gym class will be held in the gym or outside when possible. All other special area classes will take place in the special area classrooms.

Returned library books will be placed in a quarantined area for sanitation purposes for at least 4 days before being placed back on the shelf to borrow.

All physical education equipment, computers, musical instruments, and art supplies will be wiped down before and/or after each use.

Chorus and Band for 4th and 5th grade will still be held during the enrichment period on their scheduled days. Band will be taught by sections and chorus will be held in the gym to allow for 6 foot distances. As of right now, all concerts will be virtual.

Yellow - Special area teachers will rotate to homeroom classrooms to deliver their instruction.

Chorus and Band procedures will be determined.

Dismissal

Green & Yellow - Dismissals will be staggered and multiple building doors will be utilized. Parent pick up will remain at the front main doors after all buses are dismissed (around 2:45).

Students will need to wear masks/face shields as they walk to their bus and as they ride the bus.

NO BUS PASSES WILL BE ISSUED! All students MUST ride the bus/van assigned to them or be picked up at the school by an adult listed on their approved contact sheet. Exceptions will be made for families with custody orders and during Early Dismissals.

Masks, Face Shields, and Face Coverings

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has mandated that: “Children two years and older are required to wear a face covering unless they have a medical or mental health condition or disability, documented in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act or IDEA, that precludes the wearing of a face covering in school. Accommodations for such students should be made in partnership with the student’s health care provider, school nurse, and IEP/504 team.”

All CHES students are required to wear a face mask when a 6 foot distance is not possible on the bus, in the classroom, bathrooms, and/or hallways.

All students will be provided with one washable CHES face mask. Students can choose to wear a face mask, face shield, or face covering. Disposable face masks will be available in the event that a student forgets his or her face mask or it gets lost or destroyed.

CHSD Remote Learning Option

If you DO NOT want to send your child to our school for in-person learning, you may choose the CHSD Remote Learning Program option. The expectations for this program will be very different than the virtual experience in the spring.

CHSD Remote Learning Program Information:

1. CHES teachers will be facilitating the remote learning lessons and assignments.

2. Students in the CHSD Remote Program will be required to sign on to interactive classes during the school day at specific times.

3. Students will be graded using the A, B, C, D, F grading scale, NOT pass/fail.

4. Students must complete all assignments in a timely manner to receive credit.

5. New instruction will be occurring everyday through interactive videos and pre-recorded videos.

6. CHSD teachers will be using the SAME CURRICULUM and RESOURCES for in-person learning as they are for the CHSD Remote Learning Program. In the event that you would want your child to return to in-person learning at any time during the year, the transition will be seamless.
