From our PFC Co-Presidents

As we are now into Week Six of this school year, we hope you have gotten over the initial speed bumps of distance learning and are finding this new educational process a little easier to manage. Maybe by the time we eventually return to the classroom, some of us will qualify to get on the Zoom payroll as IT consultants?

In the meantime, there remains a lot going on with Thornhill, even if we aren’t on the school’s grounds. Coach is showing his MVP qualifications with his P.E. classes. Alexis Lavine-Moore is re-starting the school’s gardening program. And our Spirit Wear team is working on providing a slate of gear that will help us show our community pride while our kids are learning from home.

We’d also like to thank everyone who attended this month’s PFC meeting yesterday, and we encourage all Thornhill parents to log in to our monthly meetings via Zoom. It is your involvement that makes Thornhill unique and keeps our school together. The next one is on Monday, October 5th at 5:30pm (information on Konstella).

Rex Crum and Alicia Streight

Math Book Pickup

All math book pickups this week have been postponed per OUSD. We will be setting up a schedule for next week. Sherry will send a Konstella message later this week when we have a finalized schedule.

Shop and Earn for Thornhill

When you order essential items on Amazon, have groceries delivered from Good Eggs, and shop from a number of other merchant partners, your order can earn donations for Thornhill PFC that go right back into the school. Download the Box Tops app and scan your receipts -- those boxes of Annie's mac & cheese, Cheerios, and other nonperishables can earn funds for the school wherever you shop. Check our Shop & Earn page for details.

There’s Still Time to Sign Up for Enrichment Classes!

We’ve added 2 new enrichment class options for Origami Mami (starts September 17) and Martial Arts and Self-Defense (outdoors, socially distanced, started September 14). Also, the Berkeley Chess School has added a Thornhill-specific class on Thursdays from 3-4pm starting on October 1, along with its regular offerings.

Additional offerings: ANTS Sports, 3 O’Clock Rock, Jazz Education Ensemble, Nusku Arts, Doug’s Drama, and Spanish.

Read about these new programs and the previous offerings on Konstella.

Individual Class Printed Packets (No More OUSD Strong Start Packets)

If your teacher tells you that printed materials need to be picked up, they will continue to be in the same spot —- on the fence near the TK trailer and the Alhambra entrance. Stay tuned and check Konstella for updates on pickups postponed by poor air quality.

About the Thornhill Newsletter

The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.

Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Jill Evans, at by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.

THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VPs of Communications Erin Proudfoot & Evie Nagy, PFC Presidents Rex Crum & Alicia Streight, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
