Through the Eyes of a Child

I wanted to share a special story, one that I have reflected on since it occurred and one that has brought tears to my eyes on more then one occasion. Last week, a student in Sarah Driskill's classroom came in with the biggest smile holding out a Kroger bag. The student was so proud and told Sarah that she had 'brought a can for Cool to Care'. As Sarah took the bag and looked inside, she realized that the student had indeed brought a 'can', but that it was empty. Holding back the tears herself, she told the student to put it with the other items on the table to be counted for their classroom total. While I do not know the exact financial background of this child's family, from what I do know I'd assume that there are financial burdens. However, this sweet child wanted to participate and give so badly and give, that she took a can out of the trash and brought it to school. While I'd like to hope that this was a misunderstanding on the part of the family, from what Sarah has shared about the little girls face, I think that this may have been the only way this little one could figure out how to participate.

So, while the holidays can be stressful, it is important that we all remember what the season is really all about, to take a moment and stop and be thankful for all that we have and can do for others. I encourage you to try and find a quiet moment this week to just look at your students and think about all the things that they may be facing at home, to be extra patient when they seem to be a little over excited, to ask yourself 'am I making life easier/better for these little one?'. Thank you for all that you do do for our students and for going the extra mile to make life better for them!

Cool to Care

With just two more days to bring in items for Cool to Care, I am again overwhelmed with the generosity of our Thomson school family. I can not thank you all enough for promoting this project with our students. A special 'thank you' to Ryan Welch and Jim Bass for sorting and moving all the items that have been brought in. If your classroom has reached either the 200 item 'Candy Cane Party' or the 400 item 'Movie and Popcorn Party', please work with Anna or Lynne to schedule this at a time that works with your schedule. If you reached the 300 item level, I will let you work out a time with either Michael or Ryan for your extra gym or music. As of last Friday, we were just 500 short of our 3,500 item goal. If you think about it, please send me your daily totals...I am sure that we will reach our goal.

Fire Drill this Week

This Friday's Fire Drill will be a little different than those we have had in the past...it will take place at lunch. Please prepare your students by telling them that it is important to listen to their playground monitor and to closely follow directions so that they know how to leave the building if they are at lunch and there is a fire or fire drill. I will be meeting with the playground staff to review the evacuation procedures prior to Friday.

Staff Attendance & Tardiness

I know that this is a very busy time of year and we are all hurrying about to get things done, however, it is important to adhere to your contractual or hourly times. Whether you are a teacher, parapro, monitor, kitchen staff, I count on each of you to know your work hours and to be here on-time and work until the end of your day. Coming in a few minutes late or leaving a few minutes early effects those around you. If you are unsure about your official work times, please let me know.

Mark Your Calendars

Please mark your calendars for Monday, December 21st. This will be the date of the staff Christmas Luncheon put on by the office staff. Please look for more information to come.
