Veteran's Day
Next month, on November 10th, we will celebrate Veteran's Day with a school-wide assembly. We love having veterans com help us celebrate this special day with our school. If your child has a relative that is a veteran and is interested in coming, please let Mrs. Farrow know as soon as possible by sending her an email, farramy@pewaukeeschools.org. In this email please provide Mrs. Farrow with the following information:
* If the veteran would like to speak to a class after the assembly (which classroom)
* Brief history of service, for a quick introduction during the assembly
Mrs. Farrow needs this information ahead of time in order to honor them properly during our celebration, so please make sure you email her before November 10th.
Red Ribbon
This year, Horizon students and staff members have been focusing on the themes of unity and community. We’ve already participated in a play, an assembly, and many classroom activities Our next step is to show this unity by weaving a continuous red ribbon throughout the building before our November assembly. If you’d like to help us by donating ribbon (preferably solid red, at least one inch wide) please send it to school or contact Mrs. Farrow. Thanks for your support!

Reading
Writing
Spelling and Grammar
Math
Students will have an opportunity to look at their tests next week and reflect upon the goals they set for this unit. I think students will be proud of the progress they made from the pre-test to the final assessment. (I know I am!!) This process allows students to focus on the growth they made over the first six weeks of school, not on the number grade.
Science/ Social Studies
This week, students had an introduction to what our Science classes may look like. They moved through several stations: physical lab, image lab, reading and familiarizing themselves with the Science book. This short introduction helped us set expectations as a class as to how a scientist works in a productive and safe manner.
Upon reflection, we are going to switch gears back to Social Studies. Although the kids are really excited for Science, now that they have gotten a little taste, our switch back to Social Studies is in their best interest. As we move into our next Language Arts units, which are based in non-fiction, historical reading, it only makes sense that we offer the students the opportunity to learn the history first in order to write a non-fiction piece with more background knowledge. The other benefit is that we move seamlessly through Social Studies for one semester and then Science for the second semester. This tends to help the material feel more cohesive and allow the students to maintain a deeper level of focus on the subject area. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns with our new plan. The students were very open to the change when we spoke this morning.
