MUSTANG MINUTE
AUGUST
August 29, 2022
Greetings Mustangs,
August is coming to an end and as we are nearing Labor Day weekend I ask that you do a quick check in and make sure that your student is on track with classes. I know firsthand the importance of starting off the year on the right path and that includes staying up to date with schoolwork from day one. Let’s start strong, Mustangs so that we can finish strong!
A huge congratulations to the student athletes and coaches of our Cross Country running team! Four out of six races were won by Chugiak. Our girls swept open, JV and Varsity races and our boys took home open honors and a close to second place finish in JV. And what a game, set, match it was for Volleyball Friday night as they too emerged victorious against the Eagle River Wolves! Keep up the good work, Mustangs!
We had a great turnout last week for Back to School Night. I want to thank our parents and families for spending the evening with us as we strengthen our community to support students. #MustangStrong
Sincerely,
Megan Hatswell

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH
Free and Reduced-price (F&R) Meals have returned, which means families with students attending Chugiak must apply for F&R meal benefits this year. Please visit the Student Nutrition website (https://nutrition.asdk12.org) for more information and to complete an online application. The website includes instructions to help parents complete the online application.
Safe Internet Usage and Monitoring Student Activity
In an effort to keep students safe from potentially harmful online activity, ASD monitors all activity through all Google applications for any content related to:
· Drugs & Alcohol
· Harassment
· Nudity & Sexual Content
· Profanity & Vulgar Language
· Suicide & Self Harm
· Violence Towards Others
This monitoring process screens documents generated by, shared by, or shared to students via Google Drive, which includes documents that may be submitted via Google Classroom. These documents include but are not limited to Google Suite and Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, as well as a variety of image file formats. When questionable content is identified, it is flagged and a report is forwarded to school administrators, who will in turn notify parents or guardians. Again, the focus here is maintaining a safe and healthy online learning environment for all of our students.
Schools have always borne the responsibility of monitoring students’ school-related work and communication. Given that instruction, communication and work submission can be web-based, this safety check has taken on a new form. All monitoring follows the strict guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which safeguards sensitive student information. The District takes staff, student, and family confidentiality very seriously and has robust systems in place to ensure that information is not released in an unauthorized manner.
For more information and resources to help guide the discussion with your children about safe internet use and online behavior please go to www.asdk12.org/safecomputing.
Alaska Safe Children’s Act
Chugiak High School will be teaching the Alaska Safe Children’s Act/ Personal Safety. Our teachers will present an age-appropriate lesson about personal body safety in a non-threatening way, along with the skills needed for self-protection. The focus of the lessons will be to empower students with the information and skills to protect themselves and seek help from the physical, psychological and emotional harm that can occur from abusive situations. These lessons are a part of the Anchorage School District’s plan to enact the Alaska Safe Children’s Act and will be handled in a sensitive, respectful manner.
Backpack Policy
Students are expected to put their backpacks in their lockers at the start of the school day and that they should remain there for the entire day. Students are able to carry small bags or purses for personal items (i.e. Lululemon bags, fanny packs, lunch boxes, zip up binders, etc.) The standard test to better understand sizing: if an 8x11 piece of paper fits in the bag it will be considered a backpack.
Students with medical needs or who are using crutches will be issued backpack passes by the nurse or by school administration. We will work with students and parents if additional accommodation is needed.
