Volume 4: Work-based Learning
As part of our district Career and College Readiness goals, we strive for 100% of SASD graduates to be career-ready. One such indicator of career readiness is successful completion of a work-based learning experience while in high school. Work-based learning can come in many forms. Examples include 9-week co-ops, year-long youth apprenticeships, or other school sponsored internships. See below for a full list of work-based learning opportunities.
If you haven't started thinking about work-based learning as an integral part of your student's academic and career plan, the time is now!
Work-based Learning: Glossary of Terms
Work Experience/Internship -- This program provides work experience to 11th and 12th grade students in various occupations and is intended to provide basic employability skills with on-the-job training for high school credit. Students may earn up to one credit during the school year plus an additional 1/2 credit during the summer. This course can provide students an opportunity to gain specific, comprehensive employability skills by working toward certification in the Wisconsin Employability Skills Certificate Program. One additional credit will be awarded upon completion of this state certificate. Enrollment should occur no later than October 15 and certificate competencies must be completed by May 1.
Youth Tutoring Youth -- Youth Tutoring Youth (YTY) is an elective, credited class for high school students grades. Application for the program is made on an individual basis through the high school counselor or advisor and the Youth Tutoring Youth Coordinator. YTY tutors provide individual or small group tutoring assistance to pre-school, elementary, middle school or high school students in a classroom in Sheboygan (public, private, and parochial) working under the direction of supervising and coordinating teachers. The tutors, in addition, complete a checklist of projects for each semester served. This course is offered to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Sheboygan Area School District including North, South, Central, Etude, Warriner, and Tower Academy. One-half regular credit is awarded for each hour of Youth Tutoring Youth. Many students take YTY for two consecutive hours. Daily attendance is required. Transportation to the tutoring site is the responsibility of the student, but bus tokens can be provided upon request.
Cooperative Education (Co-op) -- For students enrolled in advanced level Career and Technical Education classes that desire paid ($10/hour) work-based learning experiences in business, marketing, family and consumer science, health, or technology careers. Students are assigned a workplace mentor and receive instruction specific to their career focus. See career and technical education teachers or counselors for further details. A contract is signed in accordance to district policies. Co-ops last one quarter and consist of a minimum of 90 hours. Students can complete multiple co-ops with a variety of employers.
Youth Apprenticeship (YA) -- For students focused on careers in automotive, banking/finance, drafting/design, machine tool production and health careers. Students apply in their sophomore or junior year and attend Lakeshore Technical College classes that align with their paid work experience. A mentor is assigned to the student at the job site. YA lasts a minimum of one year and 450 hours.
