"Will You Be My Friend?"
When children make friends, they develop important life skills. These include getting along with people who may be different than themselves, being independent and learning how to sort out conflicts and problems. These skills are important for your child to learn because children who get along with others (who share different beliefs and personalities) are less likely to have social and emotional difficulties later in life.
Part of the art of building friendships in school is learning how to problem solve when faced with a conflict or problem within our school relationships. At Proctor, we teach problem solving strategies in each grade level to give our students tools they can use in the classroom, playground and beyond. Please partner with us to review these problem-solving tips with your student, and have conversations with them that will reinforce skills taught through our PBIS behavior program.
· Think first to determine whether the action or behavior was on purpose or accident and whether there is a real threat or not.
· Try to talk out the difference, disagreement, or conflict
· If talking does not resolve the problem, then agree to disagree and walk away and stay away
· If you walk away and stay away but the problem continues or you think there is a real threat, then speak to an adult like a noon duty-supervisor, or teacher
· Remember, sticks and stones, words are words.
· Remember, people say mean things that usually are not true to get you angry and upset. When you become angry and upset about these words, you have given the other person and acted the way the other person wants you to, giving them power and control over you. Don’t allow yourself to be a victim and choose not to get upset about words that are probably not even true. If you stay calm and ignore these words, you are in control and have power over the situation.
· No matter what, follow the golden rule: Treat others as you want to be treated. In other words, treat everyone like a friend even if they are mean and do not treat you well. Many people treat others how those people treat them, so if you treat everyone like a friend, they will eventually gain respect for you and treat you like a friend too.
(PBIS World)
At the end of the month, we will recognize students who exhibit these problem-solving skills in their friendships, and model how to be a true friend to those around them.
In Need of Crossing Guard Volunteers!
Thank you for your continued support with helping fill our vacant Crossing Guard position. We are so fortunate to have such caring parents in our community willing to give their time to help keep our students safe! I wanted to update you about the continued absence of a permanent crossing guard. As of this Friday, there is still no replacement for Judy. We are reaching out for your continued support in the coming weeks. The more volunteers we have, the easier it will be in getting each day covered. We will continue to update you as we get more information about a permanent replacement.
If your available and willing to help, please sign-up on the google sheet attached:

Are you Currently Homeless?
Homeless children have access to the education and other services that they need to ensure that they have an opportunity to meet the same challenging State student academic achievement standards to which all students are held.
The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children and youth as individuals who lack a fixed,
regular, and adequate nighttime residence. The term includes,
- Children who are:
- sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar
reason;
- living in motels, hotels, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative adequate
accommodations;
- living in emergency or transitional shelters;
- abandoned in hospitals; or
- awaiting foster care placement.
• Children and youth who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
• Children and youth who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings,
substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings.
If you are homeless and need enrollment assistance, contact your school office, or the Castro
Valley Unified School District Homeless Liaison, Jim Kentris, at 510-537-3000 ext 1257.

Proctor Elementary’s upcoming annual Auction will be held in April. It will run online, opening April 7th and closing on April 13th. Historically, over 300 community members and Proctor School families have come together to help support this major fundraiser for our school. Besides classroom gift baskets, teacher times and donations from businesses there will also be auctions for gift cards, homemade goods, guest passes to museums and amusement parks, family hosted events (like last year’s wine tasting party), vacation rentals and many more generously donated items by families like yours. The event proceeds help fund a wide variety of Proctor programs including supplemental playground equipment, classroom equipment and supplies, technology upgrades as well as field trips and enrichment activities for our 500 amazing students.
If you are able to contribute or need further information, please contact Jennine Blackmon-Powell, Auction Family Outreach Coordinator, via cell phone at 619-994-0183 or at jennineblackmon@gmail.com.
