Desert Habitat

Use your paper to answer the questions

1. What is a desert?

A desert is a dry place that gets less than 10 inches of rain each year.

With your partner, measure 10 inches on a ruler.

What is bigger than 10 inches?

What is smaller?

Adaptations are special features that help animals survive in their habitat. Write one special feature for each animal below and guess how it helps that animal survive.

3. Plants of the Desert

A cactus is a plant that grows where the soil is dry and rocky—most usually in the desert. A cactus doesn’t have leaves like other plants do. A cactus has spines or thorns.

There are many different kinds. Some are thin and very, very tall, and others are short and round like a ball…a very spiky ball. There are even cacti that look like bushes and some that look like ping pong paddles.

A cactus also has lots and lots of small roots that run close to the ground. This lets the roots soak up any rain that falls quickly.
