Kesterson Elementary School

Welcome to a New School Year!

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! It is sure to be a year unlike any other. Thank you for your patience during the first week of school as we worked out the technology kinks. Despite the small bumps in the road, our teachers have been working hard to plan for an exciting year filled with learning.

Open House

Open House will be held virtually on Wednesday, September 16 from 5:30-7:00 pm. The first session will be from 5:30 - 6:10 and the second session will be from 6:20-7:00. Teachers will use this time to go over important information about their classrooms, including expectations, curriculum, and grading. Please be on the lookout for the links to the virtual Open House from your child's teacher.

Even during distance learning, daily attendance is important. However, we know that we need to be flexible in order to meet the needs of families on a variety of schedules. During distance learning, a student is considered present/participating for the day based on the following:

  • The student makes progress in their classwork leading toward mastery of the Nevada Academic Content Standards and/or a course's completion that can be verified through a learning management system or other means; and/or
  • The student participates in a real-time class session (e.g., attends a live Google Meet); and/or
  • The student meets with or otherwise communicates with a licensed teacher or licensed substitute teacher who is able to discuss the student's progress in the particular course.

Our requirement is that teachers have some sort of contact (live session, email, phone call, classwork completed) with each student every day, and that teachers have some sort of contact (phone call, Class Dojo message, email, Google Meet) with each student's parent once a week.

Additionally, we are required to do periodic wellness checks, so members of the school's Wellness Team may call parents to check in. If we do not have contact with students and/or parents for more than 2 days, it is possible that an Attendance Officer may do a home visit wellness check.

As you may know, our school's budget and staffing are dependent on student enrollment numbers. For the 2020-2021 school year, Kesterson was projected to have 780 students. As of today, we only have 694. This under-enrollment is going to result in approximately $400,000 having to be cut from our school budget this year.

What does this mean for you? It means that we will probably lose teaching positions. Some grades will lose a teacher based on student enrollment and class sizes, and some classes will have to be split up if their teacher's position is lost. This is not ideal, but we want to prepare you for this now so that it isn't a surprise when it happens.

If you have friends or neighbors who have not yet enrolled in school, please tell them to enroll before our district's count day, which is September 11. Every student who enrolls will help us save teaching positions at Kesterson.

It is the CCSD goal that every student who needs a device will receive one. We have distributed over 600 Chromebooks to date. If your child in need of a device, please email Ms. Wright at wrighkl@nv.ccsd and she will arrange for you to check one out.

If you need internet connectivity, please go to the website for assistance.

If you have questions or concerns about anything happening in your child's classroom, please contact the teacher. Every teacher has office hours built into their schedule, and that time is to be used meeting/talking with parents and students.
