Kesterson Elementary School
Welcome to a New School Year!
Even during distance learning, daily attendance is important. However, we know that we need to be flexible in order to meet the needs of families on a variety of schedules. During distance learning, a student is considered present/participating for the day based on the following:
- The student makes progress in their classwork leading toward mastery of the Nevada Academic Content Standards and/or a course's completion that can be verified through a learning management system or other means; and/or
- The student participates in a real-time class session (e.g., attends a live Google Meet); and/or
- The student meets with or otherwise communicates with a licensed teacher or licensed substitute teacher who is able to discuss the student's progress in the particular course.
Our requirement is that teachers have some sort of contact (live session, email, phone call, classwork completed) with each student every day, and that teachers have some sort of contact (phone call, Class Dojo message, email, Google Meet) with each student's parent once a week.
Additionally, we are required to do periodic wellness checks, so members of the school's Wellness Team may call parents to check in. If we do not have contact with students and/or parents for more than 2 days, it is possible that an Attendance Officer may do a home visit wellness check.
What does this mean for you? It means that we will probably lose teaching positions. Some grades will lose a teacher based on student enrollment and class sizes, and some classes will have to be split up if their teacher's position is lost. This is not ideal, but we want to prepare you for this now so that it isn't a surprise when it happens.
If you have friends or neighbors who have not yet enrolled in school, please tell them to enroll before our district's count day, which is September 11. Every student who enrolls will help us save teaching positions at Kesterson.
