Spotlight on Learning
Prestwick learning is about persistence. This can been seen from Kindergarten to eighth grade in the form of reading. You read that right, simply time to slow down and just read.
Kindergarten this week started doing "making words." Dr. Martin's sixth grade language arts class was evaluating small chunks of dialogue and partners would read aloud to each other. At Prestwick students do picture walks, read to self, read to others, analyze and evaluate text in collaborative groups, and participate in discussions about what they read. All fifth grade teachers and classes are charting their reading "stamina." Reading stamina is how long the group can read before the mind wonders elsewhere. They are graphing their stamina each day.
The value of reading cannot be placed in numbers but in opportunities. As Margaret Fuller said, "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader." We know that each child has their own journey in leading in this world. Keep the doors of opportunity open; make time to read.
