News from Mrs. Drudy's Class
We exist so children can excel.
The Week at a Glance
We will not be introducing a new story in our reading series this week. We will use this week as a review week. With that in mind, you'll find this upcoming week's spelling words to be commonly misspelled words. As you'd guess, many students will find these words difficult. As always, I've loaded this list into Spelling City for additional practice.

MAP/NWEA Testing
In today's folder you'll find your child's MAP Growth/NWEA student progress report. This report shows both your child's initial scores from the fall (FA17) and his or her scores from this recent round (WI18). The format of this report mirrors what we discussed at parent teacher conferences in the fall. Always remember that any standardized test is a mere "snapshot" of your child's performance. It is one test on one day. Keeping that in mind, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns you might have.
Ag Day T-Shirt Designing Contest
Today, Mrs. Karla Krom visited all third graders to discuss an exciting opportunity for students to design a T-shirt that could be selected as the 2018 official Ag Days shirt. The winning design will be printed onto a shirt that will be given to all third grade students attending this exciting day of learning. Ag Days will be on April 11, 2018, but all designs must be submitted by Monday, February 5. The permission form must accompany the design sheet. Students have been instructed to do the design first in pencil, and then trace with a black Sharpie. (I have Sharpies here at school that students may use if you don't have them.) These designs must be in black and white only...NO CRAYON!
Even if your child chooses not to participate,
he or she must submit the paperwork
and fill out the STUDENT T-SHIRT SIZE
in order to receive the shirt.
Jump Rope for Heart
Also in today's folder you will find detailed information about Jump Rope for Heart, a way for our students to raise funds for The American Heart Association. Students were excited to learn of this fundraising effort at today's pride rally. For information about setting up a personal fundraising page for your child please click here.
Valentine's Day
It's hard to believe that next week will usher in the month of February. With that comes Valentine's Day! I've enclosed a class list for those students who wish to exchange Valentines with their classmates. Please remember, though, students who choose to send cards must do so for every classmate. I intend to have students make boxes next week, so feel free to send in the cards anytime after that time.
On Valentine's Day, we will have a special snack. If you have volunteered to send items in, then I am sending a reminder sheet in today's folder. If you don't receive this reminder, then consider yourself "off the hook." We do so appreciate those of you who've helped us out on these fun days all throughout the year. We couldn't do it without your help.
S.T.E.M. Challenges
You might very well hear your child talking about S.T.E.M. challenges in our classroom. S.T.E.M. is simply an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. After learning that sled dogs need to satisfy their desire to run, students had a ball designing and creating a model of a sled dog exercise wheel (think hamster wheel), a real thing in Alaska. I'm here to tell you that both the process and the products were amazing things to observed. I'm telling you, the creativity and ingenuity of this group of young scientists is going to be something to watch. Be sure to check out some of the photos below
Cookie Dough Fundraiser
Parents, we desperately need your help. Our many pieces of our playground equipment are in disrepair. The LES PTO is hard at work trying to obtain funds to replace our aging equipment. As a result, we are going to be selling cookie dough. This fundraiser is just one piece of the efforts needed to raise approximately $45,000 for this cause. As always, we do not want students going door-to-door trying to sell these items. This is where you come in. We would appreciate your support in asking friends, neighbors, family members, and coworkers to purchase from us. Thank you in advance for your consideration
Box Tops in Education
Our next send-off round for Box Tops is just around the corner. Please be reminding those family members that are clipping for us to send those in. Again, you'd be shocked how much this effort contributes to the student-centered activities at our school.
Next Week's Share Topic
Free Choice!: Your child may share about the topic of his or her choice. As always, though, he/she needs to be prepared for the presentation and not just "wing it." Remember, visuals or props are needed to sustain the interest of the audience.
