2 4 6 8 How do you cooperate?
While groups are great in certain situations, be careful not to overuse groups or use them at the expense of classroom management. One way to increase the likelihood that all students are contributing is by assigning roles. For example, in a group of 3, there may be a facilitator, scribe, and presenter.
There are a variety of ways to go about cooperative learning, but there are a number of interesting methods on Teach Hub:
- Grouped according to the same skill level- ideal for differentiation
- Grouped to mix skill levels
- Grouped according to interest
Go to TeachHub.com to see their full list of 30 ways to arrange group work.
This leads us to examine how we implement groups within our own school. You will notice in the bar graph below, based on observations made during the 2nd 9 weeks, veteran teachers were much more likely to incorporate small groups in their lessons. In the pie chart, we see how this looked across all classes.
