Battle of Antietam

The Battle of Antietam might have been a great victory for the Union, but it was a HUGE loss for both the Union and the Confederacy due to the lost lives. It is now known as the battle that had the most casualties over one day.

General Lee (confederate general) was trying his best to disorient General McClellan (union general), but because of miscommunication, lost his plans that later in got revealed to the Union. With a surprise visit from the Union at Antietam, the Union "squeezed" the south in together while the south was trying its hardest to survive.

The Emancipation Proclamation came right after the Battle of Antietam. Abraham Lincoln freed ALL slaves!

Battle of Getysburg

On July 1st through the 3rd, the Battle of Gettysburg was taking place. Because the Confederacy was lacking soldiers, and supplies compared to the Union, they were trying their absolute hardest to push the Union back. But because the Union held their ground and "squeezed"the south, the Union had a great victory in one big aspect: Great Britain and France would not come and help out the south.

On July 4th, the Confederacy surrendered to the Union. The town of Gettysburg didn't celebrate the 4th of July for 81 years because of many, many lost lives and the lost battle.

After the battle of Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address, one of the most famous speeches given by Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was saying that the lost lives in all of the battles should not be in vain. And there should be a new birth of freedom where Everybody should be treated the same. Including slaves.

Battle of Vicksburg

Even though the Battle of Vicksburg was happening at the exact same time as the battle of Gettysburg, it was a Huge turning point in the Civil War. It was a big turning point because the North gained control of the Mississippi. And with gaining the Mississippi river trading, the south will have nothing.

The Union surrounded the Confederacy preventing food and supplies to reach the Confederacy. This is when the Union was really really "SQUEEZING" the south with all of their might. Gaining Vicksburg was the last thing the north needed to complete the Anaconda plan. This lasted for 47 days.
