Woodbury Junior-Senior High School - Weekly Newsletter
May 25, 2018
Message from the Principal
Hello parents,
The newsletter today will provide some highlights for events that have been occurring for the past two weeks. As May comes to a close, the volume and pace of activities continues to rise. You can see some snippets of these many activities below.
Last night Woodbury High School celebrated its 53rd annual Academic Awards Banquet. Since 1966, high performing WHS students have come together with staff, family, and friends over a meal to honor scholastic achievement and hard work. This long held tradition is truly a seminal moment in the year. 2003 graduate, valedictorian, and current Woodbury resident, Amanda Doran Dempsey, came back to her alma mater to provide the keynote address. Her poignant message centered on 'spreading your wings, but maintaining your roots' and the helpfulness of this community in her life; she paid that forward by offering to be of any assistance she can to our soon-to-be graduates. To the many students who received scholarships, awards or were chosen by their teachers for subject matter excellence - congratulations! We are proud of your accomplishments!
6th grade students boarded buses and traveled to Main Event Entertainment in Newark, DE for an exciting field trip. Judging by the smiles and laughter on the faces of the kids as they disembarked at the end of the day, it seems they had an enjoyable time!
The past two weeks have also been filled up with a number of assessments. High school students have been demonstrating their year-long learning on multiple AP exams. Given their preparation and the professionalism and caliber of their teachers, we are sure to see numerous 4s and 5s when the scores come out! 8th and 11th grade students also took the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment - Science (NJSLA-S) exam. The inquiry-based science curriculum we employ is sure to help our students on this test of the Next Generation Science Standards.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As such, we brought in a presenter from Robin's Nest to share some tips and information with our high school students. Topics such as maintaining a healthy outlook, self-care, and recognizing warning signs in others were discussed.
Kudos to Mr. Doud and Mr. Shivers who organized the Video Art Design Awards Night and the Boys Basketball State Championship Celebration respectively. Many students were able to be recognized in special ways at these events.
Last week all sixth through eighth graders were treated to a Junior High Career Day. An eclectic group of business owners, operators, entrepreneurs, and professionals came into our classrooms to share their stories and life experiences with our students. How inspiring!
Also last week another memorable event in the life of a high schooler occurred - Promenade and Prom! Students danced the night away at the Mansion in Voorhees. Our Prom King and Queen from the class of 2017 were able to come back and crown this year's winners - Christian Navas and Alysa Echevarria; congratulations!
Finally, I'd like to mention our baseball and softball teams. While they didn't make it as far as they would have liked in the playoffs, they did find a lot of success over the course of the season, displayed tremendous camaraderie, had a ton of fun playing, and cemented some life-long friendships with teammates.
Have a wonderfully relaxing four-day weekend!

Attention 8th grade Parents (Reminder from Last Week)
8th grade promotion materials were sent home with students. Each student signed off on receipt of their allotment of three tickets for the ceremony. We understand that only having three tickets is an inconvenience for some families, but it is the only equitable way to guarantee enough space for the close family of all students. In addition to the tickets, students received a letter with logistical details and a permission slip. Please contact the Junior High office for any inquiries other than needing additional tickets; there are no more to give out!
